Trans legislator Danica Roem’s takedown of Republicans is going viral for a good reason

After Danica Roem made history as the first out transgender person to win election to a state legislature, the press and social media users made a big deal out of her gracious response to the mud flung at her by her opponent.

Bob Marshall, the self-described “Chief Homophobe of Virginia,” regularly attacked Roem for being trans. He refused to debate her, used the wrong pronoun when talking about her in his advertising and on the stump, and accused her of all sorts of nefarious intent to seduce children into “transgenderism.” After Roem’s overwhelming victory, he also refused to call and congratulate her in a traditional concession call.

Despite Marshall’s narcissistic posturing and repeated insults, Roem had a classy response on national television when asked about his nonstop harassment.

“I have nothing but nice things to say about Bob. I would never attack one of my constituents, and Bob is now one of my constituents,” Roem said.

But now that Republicans in the state legislature are trying to end a centuries-old tradition of calling lawmakers “gentleman” and “gentlewoman” to avoid describing Roem as a woman, the gloves are coming off.

In a series of tweets that’s taken LGBT Twitter by  storm, Roem lays out exactly why she won and why Republicans will continue to lose in a purple state turning steadily blue. Check them out below and you’ll see why they’re quickly going viral.

Isn’t it about time we had a lawmaker who spoke truth to power?
