White nationalist sorry for robocall claiming candidate is ‘closet homosexual’

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -€” A white nationalist Trump supporter is apologizing for a robo call in Utah where he called independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin a “closet homosexual” and “open borders amnesty supporter.”

William Johnson said in a statement Wednesday he has stopped the calls and apologizes for “the mean-spirited message.”

Johnson says he sent the calls because he worries about a low birth rate among white people and McMullin, who is unmarried and has no children, typified that trend.

McMullin did not immediately comment on the apology Wednesday, saying he had not seen it.

He previously called it another “desperate attack” spreading “baseless lies” by Trump’s “racist supporters.”

Trump’s campaign says it had no knowledge of the calls and condemned the message.

The calls started going out Monday night voters in Utah, where polls show McMullin is threatening Trump.
