There are a lot of reasons I’m proud to support Hillary Clinton for President, but one big difference that is extremely important for LGBT Americans, our families, and our allies is on whether a presidential candidate would sign the Equality Act.
As an LGBT American, I care deeply about equality issues. It’s scary that even though LGBT Americans can now marry, we can be legally fired from our jobs in almost half the states in our country just for being gay. That’s why passing the Equality Act nationally is so important.
The bi-partisan Equality Act, introduced by Representative Cicilline of Rhode Island and I, would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include protections that ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. This would make discrimination illegal on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in the areas of employment, housing, public accommodations, public education, credit, and the jury system.
Very simply: Donald Trump does not support the Equality Act and would veto it, and Hillary Clinton does support the Equality Act and would sign it. We need a Congress that will send the bipartisan Equality Act to the President, but we also need a President who will sign it into law and that President is Hillary Clinton.
