US Rep. Quigley: New group to address transgender rights

Illinois Congressman Mike Quigley says he’s joined other Democrats in creating a task force to help ensure equal rights for transgender people.

The Democrat from Chicago said Tuesday the Transgender Equality Task Force will analyze some of the challenges facing the transgender community, including violence, homelessness, housing discrimination and unemployment.

He says the group also will recommend legislation to address those issues.

Among the first topics they’re tackling is how to reduce violence against transgender Americans.

In a statement, Quigley says that despite recent legal and social gains, transgender people still are vulnerable to violence and harassment.
