WASHINGTON — Vice President Joe Biden will hail the recent Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide in an appearance in New York.

The pro-gay marriage group Freedom to Marry says Biden will speak at a celebration the group is holding on Thursday on Wall Street. The group says the event will “celebrate success in winning marriage nationwide and the triumph it represents for America.”

Biden has emerged as a prominent advocate for LGBT rights since announcing his support for gay marriage in the run-up to the 2012 presidential election. Biden’s surprise declaration spurred President Barack Obama to announce his own support.

Biden has made a number of public appearances since his son, Beau Biden, died of brain cancer in May. He attended the Women’s World Cup over the weekend in Canada.
