James Dixon was arraigned Tuesday on manslaughter and assault charges. He pleaded not guilty and was held without bail.

The victim, 21-year-old Islan Nettles (pictured), was attacked in Harlem while walking with two friends across the street from a NYPD housing bureau precinct.

Police say they ran into a group of men who became enraged once they discovered that Nettles was transgender.

Nettles was repeatedly punched in the face while slurs were hurled at her during the early morning attack. She died August 22, 2013, five days following the attack.

Another man was initially arrested in the attack, but charges were dropped after prosecutors say Dixon turned himself in.
