SALT LAKE CITY — One of the plaintiffs in the court case that overturned Utah’s ban on same-sex marriage is planning to run for Salt Lake City council.
Derek Kitchen says he plans to formally announce his candidacy for the District 4 seat Tuesday.
Kitchen says he studied political science at the University of Utah and he’d represent small businesses and be a voice for social justice. The 26-year-old owns Laziz Foods, which sells hummus and other Moroccan spreads.
He’ll be vying to replace councilman Luke Garrott, who is leaving to run for the mayor’s seat.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports a formal announcement of Kitchen’s candidacy is scheduled for 10 a.m.
In December 2013, federal Judge Robert Shelby ruled in favor of Kitchen, his partner and two other lesbian couples suing for the right to wed.
