Oklahoma City YMCA opens family membership to same-sex couples

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The Oklahoma City chapter of the YMCA has announced a policy shift to allow same-sex couples to sign up for family membership.

YMCAThe group membership option is open to same-sex couples and their children, as well as any two two adults living under the same roof, along with their dependents through age 23, reports the Oklahoma Gazette.

Brenda Bennett, VP of communications for the local YMCA, said the policy change was not in response to any particular incident, but rather representative of the “changing landscape of households in Oklahoma.”

The change in policy, which applies to all 12 YMCA facilities across the metro area, received praise from local equality advocates who saw it as a step towards a more inclusive community.

Ryan Kiesel, executive director of ACLU of Oklahoma, remarked that the YMCA was an institution closely connected to inclusive practices.

The new policy will go into effect July 1.
