N.J. advocates considering next steps on marriage equality

TRENTON, N.J. — Advocates for same-sex marriage in New Jersey are weighing whether they will push for a law codifying gay nuptials now that court action has legalized them.

Leaders in the decade-old push have taken opposing sides after Gov. Chris Christie’s decision Monday to drop his appeal of the court ruling that went into effect Monday forcing the state to recognize same-sex marriage.

Lambda Legal lawyer Hayely Gorenberg says same-sex marriage is legal and more does not need to be done.

Garden State Equality founder and former leader Steven Goldstein says a law is needed to clarify religious exemptions and other issues.

Current Garden State Equality executive director Troy Stevenson said at a news conference Monday that the group and others are sorting out whether they will push for such a law.
