Gay marriage foes target GOP Senate hopeful

A group that promotes traditional marriage is funding a new statewide ad campaign in California against U.S. Senate candidate Tom Campbell — a Republican who supports gay marriage.

The Washington, D.C.-based National Organization for Marriage began running the 30-second television ad Monday. Campbell openly opposed Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot initiative that banned gay marriage in California.

In 2008, he wrote an editorial piece where he laid out “Why Republicans should vote no on Prop. 8.”

“Republicans believe deeply that government should be limited. Government has no business making distinctions between people based on their personal lives. That’s why, as a Californian and a Republican who has held elective office at the federal and state levels, I will be voting No on Proposition 8.” — Campbell

The NOM ad campaign links Campbell’s views to Democratic incumbent Barbara Boxer.
