Churches urge U.S. Supreme Court to act on same-sex marriage

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Mormon church and four religious organizations are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene and settle once and for all the question of whether states can outlaw gay marriage. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in a statement Friday, said it joined a friend-of-the-court brief asking the high court to hear Utah's marriage case.

NEW ORLEANS -- The nation's Roman Catholic bishops meeting Wednesday renewed their focus on same-sex marriage and abortion under Pope Francis. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops voted to make only limited revisions to a guide they publish every presidential election year on church teaching, voting and public policy.

Catholic bishops vow to defend religious liberty, fight gay marriage

U.S. Roman Catholic bishops on Monday vowed to defend their religious liberty, and in calling the growing acceptance of gay marriage an attempt to marginalize their faith, launched a new website aimed at promoting traditional, heterosexual marriage.
