Beyond marriage, the battle for LGBT equality marches on

For many activists, the top priority after marriage is federal legislation that would outlaw a broad range of discrimination against LGBT people. There's no such federal law now, and more than half the states do not ban discrimination by employers or public accommodations based on sexual orientation.
NEW YORK -- Even as they celebrate epic victories in the push for marriage equality, gay-rights activists acknowledge that other difficult issues remain on their agenda. There's the persistent high rate of HIV infections, the struggles to expand transgender rights, and the striking fact that even in some states allowing same-sex marriage, people can lose their job for being gay.

Atlanta police department drafts transgender interaction policy

ATLANTA -- Atlanta police have adopted new policies establishing guidelines for officers' interaction with transgender, intersex and gender non-conforming citizens. Chief George Turner said in a statement Thursday that the guideline are meant to ensure that transgender people and others are given the same level of respect and courtesy as others.

Canadian family bullied because of their transgender daughter

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- A Canadian family says they are being bullied because their daughter is transgender and the school district isn't doing enough to stop it. Izzy and Dale Burgos said ever since eight-year-old Isabella was four, she knew she was a girl inside. And that's how she returned to school to start third grade last month -- as a transgender girl.

Ohio man sentenced to 18 years to life for murder of transgender woman

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- An Ohio man was sentenced Friday to 18 years to life after he admitted to gunning down a transgender woman last December. Prosecutors said Delshawn Carroll, 20, shot and killed Brittany Stergis, 22, on Dec. 6 as she sat in her car outside public housing.

LITTLE EGG HARBOR, N.J. -- Lily McBeth, the teacher whose battles with school boards in conservative areas of New Jersey made her a reluctant symbol of the transgender rights movement, has died. University of California to add gender neutral restrooms

SAN FRANCISCO -- Responding to concerns raised by gay and transgender students and employees, University of California President Janet Napolitano directed the system's 10 campuses on Monday to create more gender-neutral restrooms and to allow students to update their records with a preferred name that does not necessarily match their legal name.
