Tony Perkins: Starbucks’ support for marriage equality led to billions in losses

Friday, September 7, 2012
In a radio bulletin that either reveals a stunning level of ignorance or sheer insanity, Family Research Council president Tony Perkins said that the National Organization for Marriage’s campaign to boycott Starbucks over its stance on gay rights called “Dump Starbucks”—which so far has collected fewer than 50,000 signers—is responsible for a $10 billion loss in profits. Family Research Council’s attacks on the SPLC are ‘dishonest’

Wednesday, September 5, 2012
Do words have consequences? For years, we at the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) have argued that they do. ... when the religious right spreads false and defamatory propaganda like the completely baseless notion that gay men molest children at rates far higher than their heterosexual counterparts, LGBT people end up, much more frequently than most people realize, at the wrong end of a baseball bat... Family Research Council — The destruction continues…

Saturday, August 18, 2012
There is absolutely no doubt that FRC, along with more than a dozen other “Christian” based organizations lie about LGBT people. And this is the root of the escalating tension: the propagation of lies. This does damage. This oppresses fellow humans. Those who continue to do this all use the Bible to validate their oppression, making it extremely vile to many Christians. You can only push on and denigrate people for so long before it boils over... [ Read more → ]

Good journalism: CNN’s Baldwin puts Perkins’ anti-gay views in context

Friday, May 25, 2012
CNN’s Brooke Baldwin on Thursday afternoon gave an almost textbook example of how to tell a complete story when dealing with an anti-gay activist. Joining Baldwin was Tony Perkins, there to speak about his afternoon press conference opposing President Obama’s support for marriage equality. Perkins is certainly one of the loudest anti-gay activists in the country, and his voice was absolutely relevant to today’s discussion, surrounding his press conference. But he always needs to be put into context, since in front of mainstream audiences he plays a completely different character than the one he plays in front of supporters. [ Read more → ]

There are some people whose views are so intractable that they will never – as the President put it – “evolve” on this issue. But those folks really are few and far between. To tell the full story on marriage equality, the media needs to talk to folks who have changed their minds on the issue and explore the changes that are happening in our culture that has led to a majority of Americans now supporting marriage equality. It also needs to expose the true roots of the views of people like FRC President Tony Perkins, so that Americans know who he is when he shows up in these debate segments... [ Read more → ]
