Mark Regnerus

Mark Regnerus is an associate professor of sociology at the University of Texas at Austin, and author of a controversial 2012 study concerning LGBT parenting called “New Family Structures Study” (NFSS), and funded by the Witherspoon Institute, a conservative think tank in Princeton, N.J., that was founded on religious principles and is opposed to same-sex marriage.

The study was later declared to be flawed in an audit conducted by the publisher of the study, Social Science Research, and was criticized by major professional scientific institutions and associations as well as other sociologists at the University of Texas. The American Sociological Association formally condemned the NFSS for being invalid in a brief to the United States Supreme Court. The University of Texas conducted an inquiry into the publication and declined to conduct a personal investigation stating that ordinary errors are not considered personal misconduct. Documents from the University of Texas at Austin show that Regnerus was provided with talking points by the Institute, and that there was direct involvement in the study by the Witherspoon Institute. The methodology of the study has received widespread criticism, but is frequently cited by anti-gay extremists.

Discredited Regnerus study demonizing gay parents continues its reign of error

Wednesday, February 5, 2014
For the anti-gay movement, call it the gift that keeps on giving. The thoroughly discredited study by University of Texas sociology professor Mark Regnerus that was released July 2012 has turned up yet again, this time in the initial brief filed on behalf of the state of Utah in its fight against marriage equality. The brief suggests that children will somehow be endangered by marriage equality, and the Regnerus study is supposed to lend credence to the false claim that children raised in same-sex households fare worse in many ways than in households with opposite-sex couples... New studies: It’s not about gay parents, it’s whether a family is happy

Monday, July 15, 2013
My family, more by happenstance than by design, falls into the characteristics described in studies for healthy families. My sons were planned for years before they arrived. They have never been cared for by a parent who was disgruntled about the role in which he had to undertake and who resented the duties he was called upon to perform. Our home has always been vibrant and vital. Depression is not a factor. We did not need a study to tell us to be this way. None of the LGBT familes I know, and that number ranges in the dozens, have had to be told to be affirming... [ Read more → ]

Gay parenting: After the Regnerus debacle, where are the apologies?

Thursday, August 2, 2012
Now that an internal audit at Social Science Research has confirmed that the Mark Regnerus “gay parenting” study was indeed so badly flawed it never should have survived peer review, it’s safe to say that we can move past examining the specifics of how it went wrong, and start looking at the deeper question of why so many in the media and the right wing readily accepted its conclusions with little critical scrutiny while dismissing the valid concerns raised by others. The Catholic Church has no place attacking same-sex parenting

Monday, July 9, 2012
With all due respect because I am not attempting to disrespect anyone of the Catholic faith, if we compared the two entities, just who has less credibility when it the harming of children: An entity pushing a bad study while it’s not covering up the activities of priests exploiting children as sex objects, - or - same-sex couples, many who open their homes to children who need love and support?
