TODAY'S TOP STORIES:

Mark Regnerus

Mark Regnerus is an associate professor of sociology at the University of Texas at Austin, and author of a controversial 2012 study concerning LGBT parenting called “New Family Structures Study” (NFSS), and funded by the Witherspoon Institute, a conservative think tank in Princeton, N.J., that was founded on religious principles and is opposed to same-sex marriage.

The study was later declared to be flawed in an audit conducted by the publisher of the study, Social Science Research, and was criticized by major professional scientific institutions and associations as well as other sociologists at the University of Texas. The American Sociological Association formally condemned the NFSS for being invalid in a brief to the United States Supreme Court. The University of Texas conducted an inquiry into the publication and declined to conduct a personal investigation stating that ordinary errors are not considered personal misconduct. Documents from the University of Texas at Austin show that Regnerus was provided with talking points by the Institute, and that there was direct involvement in the study by the Witherspoon Institute. The methodology of the study has received widespread criticism, but is frequently cited by anti-gay extremists.

Mark Regnerus
For the anti-gay movement, call it the gift that keeps on giving. The thoroughly discredited study by University of Texas sociology professor Mark Regnerus that was released July 2012 has turned up yet again, this time in the initial brief filed on behalf of the state of Utah in its fight against marriage equality. The brief suggests that children will somehow be endangered by marriage equality, and the Regnerus study is supposed to lend credence to the false claim that children raised in same-sex households fare worse in many ways than in households with opposite-sex couples...

New studies: It’s not about gay parents, it’s whether a family is happy

My family, more by happenstance than by design, falls into the characteristics described in studies for healthy families. My sons were planned for years before they arrived. They have never been cared for by a parent who was disgruntled about the role in which he had to undertake and who resented the duties he was called upon to perform. Our home has always been vibrant and vital. Depression is not a factor. We did not need a study to tell us to be this way. None of the LGBT familes I know, and that number ranges in the dozens, have had to be told to be affirming...
