NEW YORK — Michael Stipe will honor Ugandan gay rights activist John Abdallah Wambere at the Logo network's "Trailblazers" event this month. The former R.E.M. frontman will appear at the June 23 event in New York. Wambere is the leader of the gay rights group Spectrum Uganda Initiatives.

Prominent Ugandan gay rights activist asks for U.S. asylum

Wambere is seeking asylum in the U.S. to escape a harsh anti-homosexual law in his home country. The 41-year-old, who now lives in Cambridge, Mass., said Tuesday it is heartbreaking he will have to leave his community at home as well as his 16-year-old daughter, but it is too dangerous to return.
BOSTON -- Fearing prison or even death, an openly gay activist from Uganda is seeking asylum in the United States since his home country toughened criminal punishment against gays.
