NEW YORK -- A weekend of St. Patrick's Day revelry and tensions over the exclusion of gays in some of the celebrations was culminating Monday in New York, where Guinness beer and the city's new mayor planned to sit out the world's largest parade celebrating Irish heritage.

Gay Irish senator gets nomination to run for Irish presidency

Openly gay Senator David Norris announced that he was withdrawing from Ireland’s presidential campaign, after scandal erupted stemming from disclosure of letters he wrote to Israeli judicial authorities, seeking clemency for his former partner who had been convicted of raping a Palestinian teen in 1997.
