MSU gets anonymous $1 million gift to expand LGBT center’s programs

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- An anonymous gift of $1 million will expand programs at Michigan State University's Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, Transgender Resource Center. The East Lansing school announced Tuesday that the money comes from the estates of a Michigan State alumnus and his partner.

Man sentenced in death of 2-year-old daughter he tried to turn gay

FLINT, Mich. -- A Michigan man has been sentenced to more than 18 years in prison for biting and beating his two-year-old daughter to death in what officials said was an attempt to make her gay. Donovan Haynes, 23, was sentenced Monday to roughly 18 to 40 years in prison after pleading no contest to second-degree murder of his daughter, Ti'Airra Woodward, in July 2011.

Teen charged in attack on gay man at Detroit LGBT pride event

Former high-ranking Mich. Republicans support same-sex marriage

DETROIT -- Former high-ranking Republicans in the Michigan Legislature are urging a federal appeals court to allow same-sex marriage in the state. They filed a brief Monday at the Cincinnati-based court, urging it to affirm a March decision that threw out Michigan’s ban on same-sex marriage.

DETROIT -- Oral arguments have been scheduled by a federal appeals court in the appeals of same-sex marriage rulings in Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio. The Cincinnati-based U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit said in a court filing Monday that it would hear arguments in the cases on August 6.

Gay couple sues Mich. for recognition of marriage performed in N.Y.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Two men in the Grand Rapids area are suing to try to force Michigan to recognize their same-sex marriage performed in New York state. Bruce Morgan and Brian Merucci were recently turned down by the Kent County clerk's office when they presented their New York certificate and applied to change the deed on their home.

DETROIT -- The beating of a gay man was caught on tape at Detroit’s Motor City Pride over the weekend. Christin Howard, 20, told WXYZ-TV that he was taking a picture with a friend at the pride festival when five to eight men started to harass him and hurled anti-gay slurs.

Fenton, Mich., approves LGBT-inclusive non-discrimination ordinance

FENTON, Mich. -- The Fenton City Council has approved an ordinance that bans discrimination against people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. The ordinance allows the city manager to investigate and attempt to come to an agreement "terminating discrimination or reverse the effects of past discrimination."
