Discredited Regnerus study demonizing gay parents continues its reign of error

| Wednesday, February 5, 2014
Mark Regnerus
For the anti-gay movement, call it the gift that keeps on giving. The thoroughly discredited study by University of Texas sociology professor Mark Regnerus that was released July 2012 has turned up yet again, this time in the initial brief filed on behalf of the state of Utah in its fight against marriage equality. The brief suggests that children will somehow be endangered by marriage equality, and the Regnerus study is supposed to lend credence to the false claim that children raised in same-sex households fare worse in many ways than in households with opposite-sex couples...

Senate passage of ENDA an important step toward dignity, fairness

| Thursday, November 7, 2013
Despite the scare stories from those opposed to workplace fairness, ENDA does not create any special rights for anyone. It simply prohibits employers from using a worker’s sexual orientation or gender identity as the basis for hiring, firing, promotion, or compensation. It means that LGBT people will be afforded the same workplace protections already in place regarding race, religion, gender, national origin and disability. The fact is, most of America’s largest corporations have already recognized the value of treating LGBT people fairly and have enacted policies similar to ENDA. But employers in 29 states can still lawfully discriminate because of sexual orientation, and in 33 states they can discriminate because of gender identity...

SPLC co-founder reflects on Boy Scouts controversy

| Friday, February 8, 2013
It is so disappointing that an organization that has meant so much to millions of boys and young men and that has espoused the values of honesty, integrity and character is so reluctant to end a policy antithetical to our nation’s principles of equality. This was apparent when the organization chose to delay until May a vote to end this ban. While the Boy Scouts of America has never engaged in the tactics of anti-gay hate groups by defaming or attacking the LGBT community directly, such well-publicized, discriminatory policies can have the effect of encouraging bigotry.

Hate Watch: For the radical right, Obama victory brings fury and fear

| Thursday, November 8, 2012
Photo: WMC-TV via Twitter.
Hate groups in recent years have risen to more than 1,000, and the number of anti-government “Patriot” groups has shot up from just 149 in 2008 to 1,274, according to research by the Southern Poverty Law Center. For months now, groups on the radical right have increasingly fretted about a possible Obama victory. Now that that has occurred, the radical right may grow more dangerous still...

Family Research Council’s attacks on the SPLC are ‘dishonest’

| Wednesday, September 5, 2012
FRC President Tony Perkins
Do words have consequences? For years, we at the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) have argued that they do. ... when the religious right spreads false and defamatory propaganda like the completely baseless notion that gay men molest children at rates far higher than their heterosexual counterparts, LGBT people end up, much more frequently than most people realize, at the wrong end of a baseball bat...

National Organization for Marriage continues to spread lies about gays

| Friday, May 25, 2012
About the worst thing said about gay men, an allegation that is regularly dragged out by certain religious-right organizations, is that they molest children at rates vastly higher than their heterosexual counterparts. It is as devastating a charge as one can make in a country where jailed pedophiles, known in prison parlance as “short eyes,” are frequently murdered by self-righteous fellow inmates...

Black folks, this is a message for you: The National Organization for Marriage (NOM), the country’s preeminent group fighting against same-sex marriage, really, really likes you. They even want to make some of you famous! Have NOM’s principal leaders, former president Maggie Gallagher and current leader Brian S. Brown, stood up for African Americans before? Well, not so much. But it turns out that they’ve decided that you’re actually very important.

NARTH becomes main source for anti-gay ‘junk science’

| Sunday, March 11, 2012
NARTH has emerged as the preeminent source of what many regard as “junk science” for the religious right — psychology that underpins the anti-gay movement’s fervent opposition to equal rights and stigmatizes LGBT people as mentally sick.
