Angry right wingers blame ‘gay mafia’ for discriminatory bakery closing
To hear the enraged right wing media tell it, the Christian couple who landed in legal trouble for discriminating against a same-sex couple was driven out of business by the left-wing bully militant mob squad. While it is humorous to think that the LGBTQ community has that much power, that is hardly the true story.

After Sweet Cakes by Melissa owners Aaron and Melissa Klein refused to make a wedding cake for Laurel and Rachel Bowman-Cryer, they faced a lawsuit claiming discrimination.

An administrative judge declared in April 2015 that the bakers should pay $135,000 in damages. The Oregon Bureau of Labor (BOLI) agreed with that ruling and ordered the Christian couple to pay the sum in July 2015. The Kleins paid the fine in December but it is being held in escrow while they appeal.

Sweet Cakes by Melissa closed the doors of their brick and mortar business in 2013 but had been continuing to sell goods online until a few months ago, according to attorney Hiram Sasser. Now that too has come to an end, which they announced recently on their Facebook page.

While it may seem like all of this would result in financial difficulties for the couple, they have actually made out quite well on the deal. Not only have they received over $420,000 in donations from supporters through Continue to Give, a record for the site, they also hit the conservative speaking circuit to tell their tale of woe.

“The Kleins were literally run out of business by an anti-Christian mob,” writes Fox’s Todd Starnes, in an article titled, “Family bakery closes after left-wing bullies finally get their pound of cake.”

“It’s hard to believe that something like this could happen in the land of the free, the home of the brave,” he continues.

The problem is, they weren’t run out of business by anyone but themselves, first for failing to follow the law and then perhaps because they realized being professional victims paid better than selling cakes in jars via Facebook. It appears as if they were still able to continue that business, which they were still engaged in until a few months ago.

The article was picked up by conservative sites The Patriot Post and TownHall, both of whom went with the headline, “Family Bakery Bullied By Militant LGBT Mob Closes.”

Starnes writes, “the Kleins have faced unrelenting attacks from the LGBT community. Their business was boycotted. They were bullied. Their children received death threats.” He leaves out the fact that the Bowman-Cryers also received death threats. They were also denied food assistance because the person responsible for approving them recognized their names and incorrectly assumed they had been paid the $135,000 that is still tied up in a government account while the case drags on due to the Kleins’ attempts to not pay.

RedState published an article by writer and talking head David Leach titled, “Sweet Cakes By Melissa Closed For Good By Gay Mafia,” which similarly casts the Kleins as victims, in spite of the fact that they brought on the trouble themselves with their own discriminatory actions.

“As I have documented many times, the agenda of the LGBT radicals has nothing to do with equal rights. Their primary objective is the complete and utter destruction of morality and Christianity in America–and in the end, the Constitutional rights of every American,” Leach hyperbolically spews.

“From same-sex marriage to the transgender hysteria currently consuming the nation, the Gay Mafia thugs working on behalf of the LGBT radicals–consisting of government, public schools and politically-correct businesses–are armed to the hilt, and stand ready to advance their pro-LGBT, anti-Christian, anti-American agenda,” he continues, apparently serious.

As David Badash of The New Civil Rights Movement points out, “The Kleins, if they invest well, likely will never need to work again. They continue to receive donations via their crowdfunding site, which is an amazing feat of marketing. No word on if they have shared their new wealth with the truly needy.”
