Channing Tatum to play a merman in gender-switched ‘Splash’ remake

He’s played a stripper, an alien, a cop, and in a stretch, an actor, but now Channing Tatum is set to play a male mermaid in a reboot of the 1984 Tom Hanks movie hit, Splash.

The Alabama native won the role of Madison originated by Hanks’ costar Daryl Hannah in the comedy romp remake. And Tatum’s 22 Jump Street costar Jillian Bell will take on the role Hanks played, the youngster saved by a mermaid who grows up, finds her again and falls in love.

Deadline reported it was Bell who first pitched the concept of flipping the characters genders for the remake.

Think Ghostbusters with seawater instead of slime, beach instead of boo…. and box office, hope its producers.

The best news so far about this reimagined film is that Imagine partners Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, who cowrote the original screenplay, are teaming up again.

The movie is in the very early stages of development but has the sea-green light to proceed, reports Deadline, with Walt Disney Studios as its distributor of the “fish wish tale.”

And if that doesn’t float your boat, maybe just imagine Tatum wearing nothing but a very long, smooth tail.
