NRA blames federal ‘political correctness’ for Orlando massacre

Almost two days after shots rang out, the National Rifle Association has broken its silence and issued its first statement on the killing of 49 people at Pulse in Orlando, Fla., with an opinion piece in USA Today.

Titled, “Gun laws don’t deter terrorists,” Chris Cox wrote a remarkably brief defense of the NRA’s standard rejection of calls for more gun control in the wake of yet another mass shooting. Cox is a former congressman and current executive director of the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action.

Cox called the statements by President Obama and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton a “head fake” that should “scare every American,” because “their policies can’t and won’t keep us safe.”

He apparently omitted the last words in that sentence, which should logically ended, “from guns.” Cox’s defense against expansion of gun control laws criticized the president for being too P.C.:

“The terrorist in Orlando had been investigated multiple times by the FBI. He had a government-approved security guard license with a contractor for the Department of Homeland Security. Yet his former co-workers reported violent and racist comments. Unfortunately, the Obama administration’s political correctness prevented anything from being done about it.”

Cox also left out that the AR-15 assault weapon used in Orlando was the same killing machine used in mass shooting incidents in San Bernardino, Calif. in 2015, in Sandy Hook, Conn., and Aurora, Colo. in 2012.

Instead, he blamed Islamic extremists:

“It’s time for us to admit that radical Islam is a hate crime waiting to happen. The only way to defeat them is to destroy them — not destroy the right of law-abiding Americans to defend ourselves.”
