Stars of the BBC sitcom “Absolutely Fabulous,” Jennifer Saunders and Joanne Lumley, lead London’s Pride parade Saturday as their beloved characters—PR guru Edina Monsoon and fashion magazine editor Patsy Stone.
The actresses were promoting the movie version of the cult show, which follows Patsy and Eddy as they flee following Eddy’s accidental killing of model Kate Moss. In addition to Moss, the movie features a number of cameos from fashion industry celebrities like Alexa Chung and Stella McCartney.
While the show has always been popular with the LGBTQ community, there’s new buzz following a comment Saunders made in an interview with V magazine suggesting that Patsy is a transgender woman.
You go back and pick through it, the amount of gay references and ease with which it’s been put into the story, without it being dragged along like a great log of plot. It’s really normal that one of [Edina’s] ex-husbands now lives with his young boyfriend. It’s completely normal that [Edina] wants Saffy [Edina’s long-suffering daughter] to be a lesbian or that Serge [Edina’s long lost son] is gay and living in New York. It’s completely normal that Patsy is transgender.
“Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie” is set to hit U.S. theaters July 22.
