This Virginia woman alleges she was fired from KFC for being transgender

A transgender woman alleges she was hired and fired by KFC within an hour after being forced to come out to her new manager as trans.

27-year-old Georgia Carter says she was thrilled to get the job at KFC and that it helped her to become “an active member of society” after being unemployed:

He was like, ‘You have got the job. I am going to start you out at $7.50 an hour. It’s yours. We are going to start you training on the computer tomorrow.’ It was like 11 to 4.”

However, she says the situation changed after her manager got a look at her driver’s license, which identified her as male.

He was like, ‘My supervisor and I have a problem because on your license it says ‘male,’ but you’re…’ and I was like, ‘I’m transgender.'”

Carter says the manager then told her they couldn’t hire her because they “didn’t know which bathroom” she could use.

KFC’s management denies her claims, and says she was only brought in for an interview and never officially hired.

They also say she’ll be reconsidered if she changes her gender on her driver’s license.

Carter’s story highlights one of the many hardships transgender people endure when looking for meaningful work, leading to unemployment rates vastly higher than the general population.
