If Bernie loses, Susan Sarandon doesn’t know if she’ll vote for Hillary

(Editor’s Note: A previous version of this story featured the headline “Susan Sarandon: ‘I’d vote for Trump over Hillary Clinton.'” After reviewing the video a second and third time, we’ve decided to update the headline for accuracy’s sake. The story has also been updated with reactions to Sarandon’s comments. LGBTQ Nation regrets the error.)

In an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, Susan Sarandon — a confirmed ally and major proponent of LGBTQ rights — has suggested that Sanders supporters might not get behind Hillary Clinton:

She doesn’t [believe in] what Bernie believes in… Some people feel that she’s not authentic, that she’s a liar, so what difference does it make?

Some people feel Donald Trump will bring the revolution immediately if he gets in then things will really, you know explode.

Some people feel that… I think that what’s going on now – if you think it’s pragmatic to shore up the status quo right now, then you’re not in touch with the status quo.”

Speaking to Andrea Mitchell on Tuesday, Clinton’s campaign national spokesman Brian Fallon called Sarandon’s statements “peculiar”:

I thought those comments were peculiar. I give the Sanders campaign the benefit of the doubt. Not every surrogate that goes out actually reflects the views of the candidate. I’ll give Senator Sanders the opportunity to address those comments that Susan Sarandon made last night.”

Her statements led Slate’s Michelle Goldberg to write:

The problems with Sarandon’s position go beyond its tolerance for human sacrifice. There’s also the gormless unreality of her idea of revolution. Does she mean a political revolution, like the one Sanders has proposed? Because the major barrier to such a revolution is not a populace that needs to suffer more in order to reach Sarandon’s superlative level of wokeness.”
