The Odgaards, who were added to Cruz’s Iowa team on Tuesday, plan to erect 1,000 antigay billboards that attack gay marriage. The couple gained notoriety after losing a civil case last January, after they wouldn’t allow a gay couple to marry at their chapel.

When announcing their appointment, the Cruz campaign called Betty and Richard Odgaard “courageous conservatives.”

Rick Tyler, a spokesman for Cruz, said, “the Odgaards signed on with Ted Cruz and they’re supporters of ours, and when the senator heard their story and visited their property he was moved by it. So we’re well aware of their situation and their plight.”
