A conservative minister in Australia emphasized his reasoning against marriage equality by invoking the former relationship of Italian designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.

Erik Abetz, a liberal senator, drew attention to the fact that the couple never married; an attempt to strengthen his arguments.

According to The Australian Financial Review, his exact words were: “Lots of homosexuals don’t want to get married; Dolce and Gabbana never got married.”

The statement was made during a six-hour debate about whether politicians should be allowed to vote on marriage equality.
