Republican Presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee thinks that allowing transgender people into the military will turn it into a “social club.”
According to Pink News, these comments come on the heels of Huckabee’s claim that President Barack Obama is marching Israel “to the doors of the oven” — a soundbite he somewhat recanted yesterday, opining “maybe the metaphor is not a good one”.
While discussing the Pentagon’s plan to start disassembling the U.S. military’s ban on transgender people, a process that begins Monday, Huckabee said, “Men are men. Women are women. There’s a difference. The military is not a social organization. The military is not a place where we try out experiments. The military is designed to kill people and break things.”
He feels the ban — which disqualifies anyone who has a “history of psychosexual conditions, including but not limited to transsexualism, exhibitionism, transvestism, voyeurism, and other paraphilias” — should not be lifted, since “the military is not designed to be a social club or some type of organization where we help people feel better about themselves. If there’s something that makes it difficult for you to defend this country, maybe the military is not the right place for you.”
