For decades, LGBT adults have not been allowed to be scout leaders, but with the ban lifted yesterday, it’s now up to local chapters to decide whether or not they want to discriminate.

But why did the Boy Scouts of America ban LGBT adults in the first place? In part, it’s because of people like Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, one of many hate groups that have been pressuring to keep out gay people for all sorts of flimsy and deeply offensive reasons.

In the video below, Matt Baume debunks several of the outright lies that groups like the Family Research Council and the American Family Association have perpetuated in order to keep gays and lesbians out of the organization. “Nothing,” Baume says, “is more dangerous to someone like Tony Perkins than a gay role model.”
