Sam and Cammisano have been in Europe since Dec. 30, where they rang in the New Year in Spain before heading to Italy. The announcement coincided with Sam’s 25th birthday, although the couple has yet to make a public statement.

Sam, 25, came out as gay in February 2014. The All-American defensive lineman from the University of Missouri was first drafted by the St. Louis Rams in May, making him the first openly gay NFL player in history. After being cut by the Rams in August, Sam joined the Dallas Cowboys, but was again cut in October.

The couple met while attending the University of Missouri together.
