Wisconsin: Baraboo school board adopts transgender athletics policy

BARABOO, Wis. — The Baraboo School Board has amended its athletic and co-curricular activities policy to prohibit discrimination against transgender students.

Baraboo-high-schoolThe change adopted by board members on a vote of 4-3 Monday night includes “gender expression” and “gender identity” in the district’s anti-discrimination policy.

School board members in favor of the policy amendment say it’s necessary to comply with federal guidelines and those from the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association.

The issue drew about 70 people to the board meeting at the high school library.

While the majority of speakers supported the change, those opposed say there are too many unanswered questions about it, including how students would use school facilities like restrooms and locker rooms.

Similar polices have been adopted this month in Minnesota and Virginia.
