Boone County, Mo., workers in same-sex marriages eligible for survivor benefits

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Boone County, Mo., employees who are in legally recognized same-sex marriages are now entitled to survivors benefits from the County Employees’ Retirement Fund.

The Retirement Fund board of directors made that decision at a meeting on Tuesday. Survivors benefits allow a spouse to earn a portion of their deceased spouse’s earnings after death.

Nicole Galloway, Boone County treasurer and a member of the Retirement Fund board, said the decision came in light of recent court rulings.

She saidt there were several Boone County employees who requested the extension of retirement benefits to same-sex couples who are legally married.
