To Be Takei: George Takei, Brad Altman open up about their 27-year love story

Twenty-seven years ago, Star Trek actor George Takei was in a gay running club in Los Angeles and noticed the best runner in the club, a man named Brad Altman.

“I went up to him and asked him to train me for my first marathon,” he says. “And before long, we became partners.”

The couple kept their relationship a secret until George came out publicly in 2005. Their journey together is chronicled in a new documentary, “To Be Takei,” which opens in theaters August 22.
