DENVER — Colorado’s attorney general is giving Boulder County’s clerk more time to consider whether to ask the state Supreme Court whether she has the authority to issue same-sex marriage licenses.
John Suther’s office agreed on Tuesday to give clerk Hillary Hall until July 10 to respond to its request but threatened legal action unless she stopped issuing the licenses in the meantime.
Colorado’s constitution bans same-sex unions. But the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver ruled last week in a Utah case that states cannot ban marriages based on the genders of people participating.
Hall responded by issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Six same-sex couples from Colorado filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday challenging the court’s stay.
