Landrieu, a Catholic and a Democrat, has been a longtime supporter of civil unions. However, this is the first time he has endorsed same-sex marriage, according to the Human Rights Campaign.

Landrieu’s name appeared on a statement from the U.S. Conference of Mayors supporting marriage equality.

“The mayor has long supported ending marriage discrimination at all levels of government,” said Landrieu spokesman Tyler Gamble. “As an employer, the city of New Orleans recognizes domestic partnerships and allows our employees’ partners to be eligible for benefits.”

There are currently two federal lawsuits challenging Louisiana’s same-sex marriage ban.
