FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Delegates to the Indiana Republican Party convention have overwhelmingly approved a party platform opposing same-sex marriage.

Indiana-GOP-conventionThe state party platform now officially supports the definition of marriage as between one man and one woman. Delegates meeting in Fort Wayne beat back two efforts to remove the platform language Saturday morning.

A minority of delegates, mostly from Marion County, fought unsuccessfully to remove the language.

The convention battle revived much of the fight that played out earlier this year in the General Assembly. State lawmakers voted against placing a constitutional ban on gay marriage on the November ballot.

Opponents of placing the marriage language in the platform said it would limit the party’s ability to attract new voters and supporters.

Supporters said the language was a compromise.

In Texas, that state’s GOP is poised to adopt a new platform on Saturday that would support “reparative therapy” treatments that seek to turn gay people straight.
