Ind. Republican Party reopens same-sex marriage debate in party platform

INDIANAPOLIS — A few lines proposed for the Indiana Republican Party’s platform have reopened a debate over same-sex marriage that dominated the start of the year.

Indiana-GOPThe platform committee of the state party voted earlier this week to include language that supports defining marriage as between one man and one woman.

The party’s platform serves as an official statement of the party’s values and typically includes sweeping statements like support for fiscal responsibility.

The last platform approved at the party’s 2012 convention did not address same-sex marriage. But when Republican delegates gather in Fort Wayne next month, they’ll have to decide the party’s official position on gay marriage.

Republican Megan Robertson said the fight is divisive for the GOP. Robertson led the lobbying campaign against a proposed marriage ban this year.
