Derrick Gordon: ‘I couldn’t go on hiding and being somebody I’m not’

In one of his first live interviews since coming out as gay earlier Wednesday, University of Massachusetts sophomore Derrick Gordon speaks with NBC’s joins Andrea Mitchell to discuss the historic moment.

Gordon said he made the decision to come out because “there’s a lot of kids in my situation right now that can’t be themselves and have to hide who they really are.”

Gordon, who recently transferred to UMass from Kentucky, said he “couldn’t go the next couple months just hiding and being somebody I’m not.”

Gordon is the first openly gay male athlete in NCAA Division 1 sports.
