White House: U.S. reviewing relations with Uganda due to anti-gay law

White-House

WASHINGTON — The White House says the United States is reviewing its relationship with Uganda because of the African nation’s new anti-gay law.

Uganda’s president signed a bill into law Monday that punishes gay sex with up to life in prison. He said the law was needed because the West is promoting homosexuality in Africa.

White House press secretary Jay Carney called the law “abhorrent.” Carney said the country “took a step backward” with the law and urged its repeal.

Carney said the White House is undergoing the review of its relationship. He declined to say what that could mean in terms of aid or other impacts while the review is underway.

  22. Why???????? They didn’t do that with Russia. Besides maybe they should just make being gay nationally recognized, and legal if they want to critique another nation for the same damn thing. America is soooo annoying.

Posted on Monday, February 24, 2014 at 9:11pm
  23. The difference is that Russia has not (yet) outright criminalized the simple act of "being gay". It's a subtle point, but there's a big difference between a country limiting speech and jailing/executing people.
