Obama nominates diverse group of candidates for U.S. courts

Darrin Gayles would be first openly gay black man to serve as federal judge
Wednesday, February 5, 2014

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama nominated a diverse group of candidates Wednesday to be judges as the White House tries to address concerns from black lawmakers about minority representation on the federal bench.

The White House noted that only one of the five nominees was a white male. One nominee was Florida state judge Darrin Gayles, who would be the first openly gay black man to serve as a federal judge if confirmed by the Senate.

Obama senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, meanwhile, was meeting privately with members of the Congressional Black Caucus. They’ve complained about a lack of diversity among Southern judges in particular.

The meeting was first reported by Capitol Hill newspaper The Hill and confirmed by the White House, which declined to comment on what was said. The Congressional Black Caucus and several of its members did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Obama chose Gayles after a previous openly gay black nominee, fellow Miami-Dade Circuit Judge William Thomas, was blocked by Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio last year and then not resubmitted by the White House.

Obama nominated three others for federal district court judgeships in Florida – Florida state judges Beth Bloom and Carlos Eduardo Mendoza and attorney Paul Byron. Obama also nominated attorney Cheryl Ann Krause to the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia.

The White House also posted a new graphic on its website touting the diversity of his picks.

  16. *smh* positions of power should not be given out based on race, sex, gender, or religion. it should be based on whether or not you can do the job while holding on to the beliefs and values of our founding fathers, and maintain liberty, justice, equality and freedom. Just cause you’re black and or gay doesn’t mean you automatically should have a place or be nominated.

  19. Even as a gay woman I am very aware that politicians never do anything that doesn’t benefit THEM…..this is simply for political leverage….democrat or republican….they are all the same….self serving lying crooks.

  20. A voice of reason. Thank you. I don't care of the race, sex, or orientation of the man here; what's bothering me is that Obama is so conveniently doing this at a time where he's screwing folks over with ObamaCare. And is Darrin Gayles willing to properly serve the people, or is he going to pay homage one way or another to the person who made him judge? Say what you will; I really find this situation fishy.

  24. Given the Republicans’ redistricting, various voter suppression tactics, and anti-Democrat propaganda spread on the Republicans’ Fox “News” network, Obama better get these federal judges confirmed soon while the Senate is Democratic controlled.

  29. And the Republican House will block every single one and then accuse Obama of being too partisan.

  30. Angela of course everything they do is for political gain. That is their job. It’s what we elect them for – to do what the public demands.

Honestly, that “WELL THEY’RE JUST DOING IT FOR POLITICAL GAIN” statement is just a copout for people who want to me cynical but can’t justify it.would be like telling a waiter “You’re only smiling because you want a tip! That isn’t genuine!”

And your statement also implies that personal desire and public catering are always mutually exclusive – as if politicans have no opinion or desire of their own and ONLY do what promotrs them BECAUSE it promotes them, and no other reason. As someone who has meddled in public office before, I can say with absolute certainty that almost everything sa politican does that results in or is for political gain, overlaps their personal opinions and desires. Every time.

But no, please. Keep demanding ppliticans do everything you tell them, then complaining that they are only doing it for votes, as if wanting to please the people who give you a job is someone unreasonable or wrong.

I feel very sorry for politicans. I really do. They have the most thankless job available to the public. Most of the public will hate them no matter what they do.

  37. Mariyah, if by screwing people over you mean giving people options they didn’t have before, then yes. But you probably mean your individual situation in which you may have been mildly inconvenienced.

Screw all the people whose lives have been saved by ObamaCare – YOU might have to switch doctors.

Posted on Thursday, February 6, 2014 at 12:12am
  38. Of course you find the situation fishy. Obama is involved. Obama could find the cure for cancer and you’d find it fishy, because you aren’t looking at the situation itaelf. You just hate Obama. Quite irrationally at that.
