Hillary Clinton lauds veto of Ariz. anti-gay religious freedom bill

Wednesday, February 26, 2014

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Hillary Rodham Clinton is lauding Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer’s veto of a bill that set off a national debate over gay rights.

The former secretary of state and New York senator told thousands of students, faculty and guests at the University of Miami on Wednesday that Brewer’s rejection of “discriminatory legislation” recognized that “inclusive leadership is really what the 21st century is all about.”

The Republican bill was designed to give added protection from lawsuits to people who assert their religious beliefs in refusing service to gays.

Clinton has been traveling the country giving speeches at various trade industry events while considering another presidential campaign. The former first lady expects to make a decision whether to run later this year.

Her remarks came before an address in which she called for greater civic participation in the country.

  1. That’s nice too bad LGBT Arizonans still have no rights to work, to marry, to housing to a fear-free education but thanks Hillary Clinton for “lauding” Gov. Brewer vetoing a law that did not change anything for LGBT citizens who still have no rights.

  16. This woman and leader must be President of the United States. She’s educated, smart, and understands the law. We need Hillary!

  17. Why are people giving Brewer so much credit for vetoing a bill that she should have vetoed the second it landed on her desk? I’m sorry, but I don’t think she deserves all these accolades when she waited so long to do anything about it…she wouldn’t even say publicly whether she planned to veto it or not. It’s great that she did, but she’s hardly a saint for it.

  18. She probably had lots of things on her plate. Nobody is perfect. She did it and that's a start.

  19. Of course she isn't a saint she's a politician, but at least she did the right thing... doing her due diligence and coming to a good decision.

  21. The Bill never should have happened in the first place. That should have been made very clear.

  22. Although I am happy in the end her delay was grandstanding and Politically "Look AT Me" It should have been instantaneous.

Replied on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 5:35am
  23. FYI, the bill was 2 pages long. It took her a week to "read it"

  24. Just be happy she vetoed it. What do we achieve by getting angry at people who do the right thing?

  25. I agree with Christi. If it hadn't been for the pressure from businesses threatening not to consider Arizona for expansion, and the NFL preparing to find an alternative site for the 2015 Super Bowl, I believe she would have signed it. It wasn't our rights she was worried about but the adverse economic impact on the state.

Replied on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 6:21am
  26. The thing here is that getting angry at Brewer, at the moment, is a matter of pride. Sure, she didn't veto it because she's a good person, she vetoed it because of pressure from corporations, but the point is she did veto it, and if we get the point across that that is a good thing to do, more politicians will want to stand up for equality because they can see that it gains them more support.

  27. Even though the bill was Vetoed in Arizona..... I think we should still boycott Arizona and any state that continues this BS until they either pass an Anti-Discriminatory bill or until Gay Marriage is passed.... This crap is wasting so much time and money and not to mention, hateful and unnecessary. There are plenty of Blue States out there that can use the jobs anyway...

Replied on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 1:35pm
  28. I'm not angry that she did the right thing. I just think too many people are giving her too much credit for doing the right thing. Not vetoing the bill should never have been an option for her, but as someone mentioned, it was a politically (and, by extension, financially) motivated decision. *That* is what makes me angry.

  67. And the point of this story is what? To co-opt the victory for Hill? Let’s not pretend. The person solely to be credited here is Gov. Jan Brewer. Whether you liker Brewer’s views or not she made the correct decision in this matter, and she’s to be appreciated for that. For all the gay adoration showered upon Hill, her actions on behalf of the LGBT community have largely been symbolic & non-tangible. Give Brewer credit and stop trying to shift credit to Hill!

  68. How does the idea of taxpaying gay/lesbian citizens getting the same rights as she and her (allegedly gay) husband have discriminate against her? If someone’s religion follows Leviticus’ quote in the Bible to stone to death your unbelieving neighbor, should that then become the civil law for someone following that religion? This is one of the many reasons why it is imperative for everyone to vote straight line Democrat in every election to protect society from this kind of hatred and ignorance.
