Gay Olympic ski jumper says protests aren’t worth it because ‘no one cares’

Austria’s Daniela Iraschko-Stolz soars through the air during a women’s ski jumping training session at the 2014 Winter Olympics, Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, in Krasnaya Polyana, Russia.

KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia — An openly gay women’s ski jumper says protests against Russia’s law banning homosexual “propaganda” aimed at minors aren’t worth it because “no one cares.”

Daniela Iraschko-Stolz of Austria, who is a gold medal favorite in the women’s normal hill, married partner Isabel Stolz last year.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea to make protests here, no one cares,” she said after training Sunday. “I know Russia will go and make the right steps in the future and we should give them time.”

The lead-up to the Sochi Games was dominated by criticism of Russia’s new law and suggestions that athletes and officials should protest during the Olympics.

But Iraschko-Stolz, 30, said she has no issue with Russia.

“I am here as a sportswoman,” she said. “I always say I’m together with my woman now and don’t have any problems, not in Russia or with the Austrian federation. Ten years ago it was different.”

“To jump pretty good is also a statement,” she said.

She’s been doing that, dominating the first two days of training ahead of Tuesday’s historic first gold medal for women ski jumpers at the Olympics.

  1. Um if people are protesting it means they care, so to say no one cares is BS.

  2. She's not referring to all the supporters and the LGBTQ community not caring but rather those who oppose it or simply "don't care" either way.

  18. Suzy, bullying is "the use of force, threat, or coercion to abuse, intimidate, or aggressively impose domination over others." What Ukstopgaybuly is saying is not bullying, it's expressing outrage over Iraschko-Stolz' comment that "no one cares."

  21. Geez, CHILL OUT, will you??!! It's her opinion and she has a right to it!! And she's not referring to all the supporters and the LGBTQ community not caring but rather those who oppose it or simply "don't care" either way.

Replied on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 4:30pm
  22. No Eve, I won't CHILL OUT. She made her opinion, which she is, of course, entitled to, public, which makes it open to debate. The fact that she herself is lesbian gives it more weight and will be used against those who have the courage to stand up and say no. I can just see Putin quoting her in an upcoming press release. It is reprehensible.

Replied on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 4:33pm
  23. She is competing. I'd never walk into a client meeting and use it as a forum for social change, regardless of how public that meeting is. It's not up to us to demand that athletes be out in the middle of a competition for which they've trained for years, nor to chide them for placing sports first. it's why they're there.

Replied on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 4:40pm
  24. I mean, if she is just there as an athlete, then why issue that statement at all? She entered the political arena and now must face that public.

Replied on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 4:41pm
  25. Agreed Missa, but she went ahead and made this political statement, which means she has a mixed agenda and the political one its traitorous to her fellow GLBT people who are fighting the horrendous conditions for people like us in Russia (and elsewhere). She could have just as easily said nothing and gone and do what she is there for, as you said, sport. She can't have it both ways.

Replied on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 4:43pm
  26. She is competing but yet, she did use it as a forum. What do you think she did with her statement?

Replied on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 4:47pm
  27. I am quite puzzled by her statement, frankly. What does she mean, no one cares? Surely gay and lesbian people in Russia who are getting arrested and/or fined care. Russia's laws are horrific and affect many Russian citizens adversely. And I CARE about what they're going through! So do many other people outside of Russia. We hope that by discussing this at a time when many eyes are turned on Russia we will pressure the Russian government to re-think their position, which diverges from that of most Western European countries (the countries that Russia would often like to compare itself to).

Replied on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 4:59pm
  28. It may be her "Opinion" and yes she is certainly entitled to have it, However, I also am Entitled to say that I think Her OPINION sucks.. take for instance the AIDS crisis, and the protest that took place for years, if people, especially GAY people were of the opinion that "protests didn't matter, and that no one cared" those fighting for their lives would literally all be dead today... SO YES IT DOES MATTER, AND ALTHOUGH YOU MAY NOT GIVE A SHIT, "WE" DO!!!

  30. The Olympics is an opportunity for the 'world stage' to show its best; and this also includes its Human Rights issues. The Olympics have ALWAYS been a platform for 'political, social and economic' changes. This is the very reason why countries 'bid' to 'host' the Olympics, for the 'economic' gain; it is 'politically' motivated by the 'host' country to illustrate their prowess & competence; and 'socially' for the fact of uniting world diversity. Of course the 'athletes' are the 'players' in this, but make no mistake, they are also a wheel of 'economic, political & social' value for the country they 'represent.' Pretend to have your 'Utopian' ideals that these Olympic games are simply about the 'competition' and 'integrity of the athlete' and you are seriously ignorant to all the details that go behind the resolutions of the competition, and the simple planning necessary to 'pull off' such a dramatic 'economic, political & social' show. We are ALL humans. Lets make it simple for those that do NOT comprehend. We ALL have the 'right' of birth for 'equality' and to be treated with dignity, respect & unity. These are issues highlighted by the Olympics and must also be addressed 'economically, politically and socially.' If you don't understand this, take a few moments and research prior Olympics. The two that stick in my mind are 'Jesse Owens,' and the murders at 'Munich.' This is the 'world stage,' this is about 'competition' and being the 'World's Best'; so how about behaving that way and not picking 'when and where' you have 'value of integrity and human rights.' We must ALWAYS have this 'life goal & gain' in mind and heart. It is a simple concept really... it is ALL our responsibility... 'Human Rights are Equal Rights.' This includes our economic, political & social values... they are inclusive, and our 'World Values' need to be as well! PEACE <3

Posted on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 4:25pm
  61. When we cease to care about the human rights of any group, we gives those persecutor permission to continue. WE have to be the voice for those that can’t speak or express their hurt. Stand tall for all who are different and need a voice. Demand it from the sponsors. Bankrupt Sochi.

Posted on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 4:25pm
  62. I think everyone in the comment section is missing the point. Those who don’t care, the people they are referencing, don’t give a crap about the protests. THe protests do nothing for gay rights, they just make those fighting for gay rights feel a bit more comfortable because they’re “doing something”. Do something else, something that could have more of an impact on the battle for rights. Wearing rainbows won’t change someone’s view on gay rights.

The American Civil Rights movement took decades and still African-Americans struggle for true equality. The key to equality for all is mainly just waiting for all the old bigots to die, and in educating young people to abandon prejudice.

  100. Well I may or may not get some angry people but, who cares. Honestly she has a point, and I would probably say the same thing if I was in her shoes. Yeah she isn’t speaking about those who are protesting, of course they care but come on. They are in Russia, Russia doesn’t give a damn about that. And to be honest, protesting something not even in our own country, when our country isn’t even fully ‘ok’ with it, or most of it anyways. Finish up your own country first THEN risk it in other countries. It’s stupid. Specially when you can get killed over there for it. It’s not worth it. Everyone has seemed to care about protesting equality more than the actual damn game and that is just sad. Where I do believe in equality. I believe there is also a time and place for everything. THIS is not the time, nor the place.

  111. clearly I see a bias here… You always criticize the anti-gay law in Russia but I rarely here anyone here criticizing the recriminalization of homosexuality in India or even the Death Penalty in both Saudi Arabia or Iran… ohh, and the US is not clean either… You have politicians who wants to re-criminalize homosexuality in your country and not to mention all the rhetoric I am hearing… maybe we should clean our backyard first before we criticize other country… Countries such as The Netherlands and Sweden can criticize Russia because they value the rights of the LGBT community but America have 7 states that is worst than Russia…

  119. Im a big gay homo I care about our rights very much but I also care about every single person in these Olympics! They work so hard to accomplish something that none of u or me could even phathom… russia sucks for their laws but we only have 16 out of 50 states that allow gay marriage! We r struggling for equality here too ….so watch or dont watch…russia has only been free since the 80s…give em time..I hate it too but we need to focus on Americas issues right now GOO USA OLYMPIANS!!

Focus on the LGBT community who aren’t afraid to stand up for what’s right…who make something of their lives rather than waste it playing with balls and pucks all day.

No wonder all she can accomplish in life is athletics. She has zero intelligence. Fuck this bitch. She can kill herself and prove that “no one cares” about her.

  139. I care but this is her job. And she cannot do a good job if she gets caught up in the parts that don’t ensure a winning path. I cannot walk into work tomorrow and start worrying about how I can bring gay rights into every meeting, email I write, etc. so she sees this differently, for her this is not the right stage. God forbid she have an opinion. She is doing her service – she publicly married, took a new name, is out, and is in the public light not hiding in part because she is good at what she does. Isn’t that a service to us all? We can’t all contribute in the same way. We have become so intolerant of even each other. It’s pretty pathetic how judgmental we are thinking we know best for our brothers and sisters.

They staged a protest in their own right, and this shed light all over the world. Take a stand for what you believe in. Don’t ever give up, you can’t if you want to make changes

Do I agree with her stance? No, but at least she can express herself in a mature manner. Those of you spewing hate and dumbing down the discussion? You’re a bigger problem than she is. Protesting mistreatment is NEVER wrong- and there are plenty of people who care. It seems to me that this athlete is basing her opinion based on her own apathy.

Posted on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 5:34pm
  167. I disagree. One of the reasons why the state of WA and the US recognize me and my partner as married couple is because straight people care and because we protested ones it wasnt easy but we did it. I feel sorry for this athlete.

Oh, yeah, easy for you to say! You don’t want to protest or whatever, that’s fine. But don’t discourage others or belittle their efforts.

It’s been legal in Canada for like a decade, before I came out or fully accepted being gay. Yes, very recent, and I know it takes time, but that still won’t stop me from speaking out against countries that still have homophobic laws. Maybe it’s unrealistic to expect change overnight, but that won’t stop me. That doesn’t make what they do right.

And the worst part is that Russia is heading in the wrong direction, getting worse instead of better.

I hate the ‘I’ve got mine so whatever” attitude.

Posted on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 5:57pm
  174. Basically, her comments show that she doesn’t care…SHE is free to marry. SHE is free to be openly gay in her country without fear of imprisonment. Protest DOES work, and if she bothered to look at history, she wouldn’t make such a moronic statement. She needs to ask people in India if Ghandi’s protests worked. She needs to ask African Americans if Martin Luther King and protests during the civil rights movement made a difference. But she’s not interested in helping others. Why should she? She and her wife are free, and the only other thing that matters is winning a gold medal. I hope she comes in last place. She doesn’t deserve a medal.

The issue is that THEY don’t care. And the real competition here is for human rights which completely outweighs this bloated athletic event.

  181. Oh how quickly she is abandoned by her community. Though I use the term loosely these days. She’s right. NO ONE CARES OVER THERE AND IT WOULD ONLY CAUSE PROBLEMS RIGHT NOW.

Sitting behind a computer screen it’s really easy to hurl insults but it’s relatively easy to get a plane ticket too. I don’t see anyone willing to risk their hide for their community. Way to stab us all in the back.

Way to help our image here at home by immediately bitching when an openly lesbian woman who decides to focus on her sport instead of making herself a martyr in a country that is just looking for some excuse to hurt every gay person there.

There is no pride in this thread and it’s not her that makes me ashamed to be a part of this community. It’s the people who immediately think they know best and could oh so totally have been a pin up for gay rights. Only no one asked them. Oh bummer.

I guarantee that her boss, supervisors, coaches, etc etc; all probably said something to most of the delegates in order to just get through the olympics. There is a time to make a stand and a time not to make a stand.

As it is, if they do speak out; in a country where they have laws on the books against it-they can be prosecuted and then they may lose their endorsements among other things. They’re guests. Nothing more.

Also, just a reminder to some of you-a debate means you hm, debate. Not sling things like oh she’s stabbing us in the back. That’s just bitching.

Posted on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 6:12pm

  200. There in lies the problem. That is the success of “the man”. Protests once worked. A mob appears on your streets with signs, you quickly realize they could turn violent, so you appease them. Or you systematically convince them that they can’t change anything, and they might as well sit at home and watch the entertainment that has been carefully selected for them. Rise up. Stand up for what you believe in.

  227. Love the Winter Olympics will NOT be watching it !!!! Russia treatment is no different to how the nazi’s treating the Jews, gay people and political dissidents in the 30′s but now we have social media I care and so does our community !!!

  228. She is so wrong, what she really gets across is, I’m okay in Austria, I don’t care about LGBTQs in Russia. Let them fight their own battle, she’s a self centered, selfish, lazy(I don’t want to be bothered) disgrace to all LGBTQs everywhere. I’m not watching the Olympics either.

  229. Not only do people care, but MESSAGE TO RUSSIA: The whole world is watching and pretty much everyone thinks you are fucked up.

  234. She was more concerned with her lifelong personal athletic goal than the greater good. It would be a lot of pressure, and her parents have probably spent their retirement on her training. It’s not as easy as protesting the olympics from one’s living room, and just watching SVU instead.

  235. i understand her not wanting to protest personally when thats not what shes there for. i mean that shits scary idk if i would be brave enough unfortunatly. BUT she should not have made that comment and put it out there. for the people in that country being persecuted..it has to be so hard to be brace and stand up against oppression they need to know that we support them. that our hearts are with them. to give them hope. comments like that can be so destructive to people protesting that are just teetering on the edge of giving up anyway due to fear.
