PASADENA, Calif. — Standing atop a giant wedding cake float, Aubrey Loots and Danny Leclair exchanged vows New Year’s Day in the first same-sex marriage during the Tournament of Roses Parade.

Throngs of spectators cheered as the men, dressed in dark suits, faced each other and held hands before the Rev. Alfreda Lanoix, who officiated the ceremony aboard the AIDS Healthcare Foundation float.

Days earlier, a San Diego woman launched a Facebook page urging people to boycott the 125th Rose Parade after learning of the couple’s plans. But some like Jennifer Adair, who cheered along with her girlfriend, lined the streets just for this moment.

“We’re a modern-day society, so accept it. Don’t worry about what other people do,” Adair told the Los Angeles Times.

The Pasadena Tournament of Roses, which puts on the parade, had said the float represents this year’s parade theme, “Dreams Come True.”

Kevin Ferguson, who watched the couple pass by, said he supported their move despite opposition by some.

“You can’t put a timetable on another person’s freedom,” Ferguson told the Times.

Loots and Leclair, who met across a crowded dance floor 12 years ago, own a small chain of hair salons. Their wedding came toward the end of the two-hour parade festivities.

Los Angeles Dodgers longtime broadcaster Vin Scully, the parade’s grand marshal, kicked off the show after six F-16s from the Air Force’s Thunderbirds roared overhead.

“Instead of me throwing out the first pitch, let’s start the parade,” said Scully, who will toss the kickoff coin at the Rose Bowl match between Stanford and Michigan State.

One by one, flowered floats, exotic equestrians and brass bands marched along the 5 ½-mile route.

A heavy police presence ringed this year’s revelry in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings. More than 1,100 officers patrolled the crowd. Bomb-sniffing dogs and a wide range of video surveillance also were used to detect suspicious behavior. No major incidents were reported.

The wedding float won the tournament’s Isabella Coleman Award for “best presentation of color and color harmony through floral use.”

I did have issue with the grandstanding and in general this attitude that permeates culture, that forces this to be done simply to 'rub it in someones face'. Clearly this was an attempt to aggravate those people that object, and NOT just a wedding. They could have gotten married any time or place.

  49. People will have to get used to this. It's not hate as some of you claim. It's just orientation to this. That is not so hard to understand. Patience. This is a political move. Marriage is a private matter. They do not need our approval. They chose to do this, and people do get married in many strange ways...on roller coasters, sky diving, under water, etc. In a way this just gets people used to the idea. One thing is sure, they will not have shotgun marriages he-he. Be happy - have patience with those who get upset.

  64. Janice, try actually reading your Bible instead of parroting an interpretation, based on hatred. The actual destruction of Sodom was because the people were self centered and refused to aid the poor and take care of the helpless. It's right there, in print, so really read it for a change and then shut your mouth before you make a bigger fool of yourself than you already are.

  71. Jesus Christ, who is God Incarnate, did not condemn gays though he condemned divorce. The prohibitions in the Old Testament are not binding on Christians since they are part of the antiquated Mosaic Law that Christ fulfilled and nullified. The Apostle Paul's personal opinions are not sacred scripture....he also said Christians should not marry unless they could not keep their sexual urges in check and then marry so they would not commit fornication. Clearly opinion and not scripture.

Replied on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at 11:45pm
  72. I am not sure what Xtians are bitching about even their little apostle god who they worship (PAUL) said in 1 cor 7:1 that it was good for a man not to TOUCH a woman. Hallelu! The Apostle Also lied about the resurrection of Jesus. In 1 cor 15:3-8 He makes some claims that really need to be examined carefully, He says that it was Peter that saw Jesus firsrt. So yall get a load of this there are plenty of mistakes and contradictions in the Christian New Testament. Read this and then tell me something is not quite right. Sorry for this being so long but look at the lies of the apostle Paul. I Corinthians 15:3-8 ~ For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared [first] to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. This bare list stands as the earliest extant reference to a resurrection tradition. But there are big problems. First, Deut. 24:16 assures us that, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin. Second, Paul refers to Old Testament scripture that is non-existent. No one has yet been able to locate it. Third, this version contradicts that of the gospels on several important counts. In the schedule of appearances Matthew, Mark and John say that following his resurrection Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene who, in spite of her prominence in the gospel passion stories, Paul never mentions. According to Luke the resurrected Jesus first appeared to the two travelers on the road to Emmaus. The twelve, apparently referring to the apostles, had to include Judas Iscariot since his replacement was not officially appointed until after Jesus is said to have ascended to Heaven (Acts 1:26). So, are we to believe that Paul was not aware of the tragic and bizarre events surrounding Judas Iscariot’s alleged betrayal and death? The only thing we can conclude is that either Paul is lying or the gospel accounts of Judas Iscariots’ betrayal and death are bogus. Paul then adds, After that he [the resurrected Jesus] appeared to more than five hundred at once. This claim has been questioned by many the earliest of which there is any record is that of Thomas Paine. In his great work, “The Age of Reason,” Paine points out that, “It is only Paul who says that [the resurrected] Jesus was seen by five hundred at once. It is not the five hundred who say it for themselves. Who were they? Could their testimony be relied upon? It is, therefore, the testimony of only one man, Paul.” In verse 8 Paul makes what can only be described as an astounding revelation. He says, last of all, as one untimely born, he appeared to me. What are we to make of this? The word “appear” means to become visible – to be seen, but the alleged encounter on the road to Damascus was auditory, not visual. So, is Paul claiming to have actually seen the resurrected Jesus? If so, that is strange indeed considering that at the alleged time of the resurrection, around 30, Paul, or Saul as he was then known, was still a committed Jew living in Jerusalem happily persecuting Christians and other law breakers.

  74. It's a waste of time trying to point out the inconsistencies in the god book. The deluded believers are well practised in the art of cherry picking. If one version of the bible doesn't suit their beliefs, they will just quote from a different version or blame an error in translation. Happy New Year and may the Invisible Sky Pixies be with you.

How much compassion does one have to display before he/she is called compassionate? Should I revel in the sins of people in this life and help them on their way to Satan, or is it more compassionate to show them the error of their ways, all the time realizing that my sins are deadly, too. I mean, if they continue on the path to hell, should I now try to bring them Christ?

  120. WOW i watched the parade but i didn’t know it was a real wedding. SOO COOL!

Posted on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at 9:58pm
  121. Janice, I see you reference Christ, so I am hoping that my assumption that you are Christian is correct. Make sure you understand Christianity before attempting to preach it. Jesus’ death fulfilled the covenant of the Old Testament. Those laws no longer apply, unless of course my assumption is incorrect and you are IN FACT NOT Christian, then I apologize and you may resume your judgements and all that jazz.

Posted on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at 10:13pm
  125. Congratulations to the couple but as for the parade, they didn’t broadcast any of the ceremony or the kiss, nor did they even mention same sex marriage or that a marriage had even taken place or who the people on top of the cake were or why they were there. Commentary was as follows… Oh look there’s the AIDS Healthcare Foundation float, origination date of foundation, cause of foundation, achievements of foundation… Sigh as if thinking “Whew we got through that! ” Now this marching band looks spiffy!

Posted on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at 10:14pm
  126. They didn’t show it on tv…That is why I watched the parade on TV.

Posted on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at 10:15pm

  163. Anybody else think NBC’s broadcast anchors were awkwardly fumbling trying to talk about it? Some vague mention of “couples and newlyweds”. Why weren’t the vows shown as they happened? Maybe they’re more comfortable talking about HIV than same-sex marriage.

Posted on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 2:25am
  177. I saw HGTV’s coverage of the parade and it made almost no references to this float. They would gush and gush over just one see or bean installed on another float. When will be treated as if we had a float that means something to LGBT people….we are real people too. Plus would the Scotts company do as well if every LGBT person gave up gardens and yards? I think notl

Posted on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 2:30am
  178. Hgtvs coverage did show the float.

  182. I look forward to a time (probably after I’m dead) that when gay and lesbian couples, families, and people are publicly celebrated in some way that others don’t freak out and accuse us of promoting some alleged gay agenda, speak crudely and rudely about us under the guise of “religious liberty,” or bemoan the end of civilization (or their religion) because gay and lesbian people are seen in a positive light.

Will you help realize this vision?

Posted on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 4:07am
  186. Michael Haynes I don’t know who you are don’t care get your facts right you and the gays will be judged by a righteous judge who is Jesus and it is going to be scareing to stand before one who can consume you by fire or let you live.

Posted on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 4:16am
  187. I have always wanted to know what is it like to be insane? Do you realize it or do you just pretend to be self-righteous and judgemental!

Posted on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 4:22am
  188. amazing…the sky didn’t fall, God didn’t reign down fire and brimstone, children’s eyes did not melt in their sockets. Just two guys getting married. Typical Christian hype over nothing important.

  193. You know Rhode Island PRIDE should be flown out the Rose Bowl parade just to see how you do a float. It’s sort of a sad joke – we have our ‘illuminated’ parade. They don’t know jack shit about light.

Posted on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 6:17am

  200. Congrats! Its nice to see love celebrated regardless of gender. As for those of you making a fuss with regards to Gods word I have one bible quote for you. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. I am Christian and I’m proud to promote Christ’s foremost message. Love. Again Congratulations on getting married :D

Posted on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 2:43pm
  201. I was let down. I watched the parade on abc hoping to share in this momentous occasion and they didn’t even show the float or let alone mention anything about the wedding. Talk about a media blackout, I wish the couple well and the movement WILL continue to grow and we will not go silently away into the night, we are EVERYWHERE. As a man who is marrying a transgender woman on February 8 I am thrilled that these 2 made such a leap in the right direction for the equality movement.

  204. For all of you who say that you are tired of the media sensationalizing Gay Marriages… HOW MANY Celebrity marriages TOP THE NEWS? Marriages which usually break up before the ink is even dry on the license? Perhaps the LGBT community is TIRED of seeing all of THOSE marriages sensationalized?? Think about that before you get your bigoted panties in a wad!
