BATON ROUGE, La. — The A&E cable television network’s suspension of “Duck Dynasty” patriarch Phil Robertson from the hit reality show has drawn criticism from the governor of his home state.

The network says Robertson was placed on “hiatus” after he gave an interview in GQ magazine disparaging gays as sinners akin to adulterers and swindlers.

Governor Bobby Jindal issued a brief statement on the matter Thursday.

Jindal didn’t offer an opinion on Robertson’s comments but said everyone is entitled to express a view. He added: “It is a messed-up situation when Miley Cyrus gets a laugh, and Phil Robertson gets suspended.”

The show is produced around the Robertson family’s home base in Ouachita Parish.

  12. That's exactly what liberals what christian conservatives to do. Hold their comments because the left side will cry and whine about it. Do think it hurt Phil's feelings because some gay activists were butt hurt about his comments??? He doesn't care who was offended. Nor was he trying to hide behind a blanket for what he said. A sin is a sin says the bible. Gays will not inherit the kingdom of God. We need more conservative Christians that will open up and speak their minds. Why is it gays and lesbians can say what they want without worrying about being charged with hate crimes or being banned from tv or what not??? But if a straight Christian man says something about gays and lesbians he's wrong and should not voice his opinions. I'm glad he voiced his opinions and what the Bible says. He only speaks truth, if people are offended by it they shouldn't be gay.

  14. All right, Kevin, lets refresh you on the Bible. Assuming we're going by what the bible says, it says, that while to lay with another man as one does a woman is an abomination, it does not say it's an unforgivable sin... so therefore it's not necessarily true as long as we ask forgiveness, right? Granted, asking forgiveness for feelings that are about as natural as having to take a piss or breathing is a bit ridiculous, but who am I to question the "Grand Design". Secondly, is it really YOUR place to say who's going to inherit the Kingdom of God? I thought for sure that was Jesus' job, as he said you must go through him before you meet his father. Thirdly, and I'm just going to beat this dead pony all day, if ANY one group of people has no right to complain about being told not to have opinions, it's christians. Christians through out history have put people to death for not believing in God and Jesus. Fourth and finally, truth? Let me enlighten you to some truth... most of the bible's stories originate from other religions predating Christianity.... and most of your holidays are holidays from other religions. The more you know.

  25. The content of his comment was deemed offensive by the A&E, so A&E removed him. He’s free to say whatever he wants, but as a representative of the show and the network, he’s constrained by how much he can say without any consequences. In this case, what he said was deemed wrong and he was removed. No one is denying his right to say what he believes.

On a related note, saying “the Bible says it, so I believe it” isn’t some shield against criticism. You can’t hide under the cloak of freedom of religious expression when you make asinine comments. For some, the Bible may seem like the end-all-be-all when it comes to justification, but for others, we have no reason to treat it as an authority. Hell, even Christians can’t determine what it actually says. You’re not automatically immune from criticism all because you think God said something.

Freedom of expression was not limited in this case.

  29. I love the show but he is a hypocrite. He and the whole family break most of the 7 deadly sins in each episode. The main one they break is greed. Cant walk into any gas station grocery store, walmart or any other type of store without seeing all of the Duck Dynasty garbage for sale. How many trinkets do I need in my home that say "Hey Jack" on them? Greed is in the 7 deadly sins.... Maybe he should think about that awhile.

  32. So actually all of you are wrong. Tim Kolanko: Phil was not hiding behind a cloak when he spoke out against gays. He said what is in the bible and his own thoughts. Did he say he judged gays??? No he voiced his opinion. He has all right to say what he wants and he did. Cynthia Giacalone: The bible says nothing about being on TV as a sin. It DOES say spread the word of God to all of the world. Phil and his family are Christians and DO speak the word from the Bible. They are reaching to a VERY large group of people. "Spreading the word" Craig Mead: Please explain the seven deadly sins they break??? Just because some companies what to make items that have Duck Dynasty of Duck Commander on then does not mean they are greedy. Duck Commander the company and the Robertson family gives a LOT more money to charities then people realize. They also do not display it everywhere so people know their good deeds. Willie does live in a nice house because of hard work and dedication in which he made good money. Phil on the other hand lives in a small house with some land. He doesn't have a $20/mil house or drive Lamborghini's. He drives a truck with a decent normal house. Does he go around flaunting money and show his millions??? No. So please explain the seven deadly sins he breaks??? I know it's not talking about sex with his WIFE because once in wed lock we are allowed to do that with our spouse who is of opposite sex.

  33. Hey Kevin, it seems you don't grasp the basic concept of the original reason for this comment and the following responses: The Louisiana governor criticized A&E for removing the show due to the anti-gay comments of its star. Just because some television personality cherry-picked something out of the Old Testament (which is moot since the New Testament came along, FYI), it doesn't mean he's right to be speaking against people when he represents A&E as an employee. If any other employee of any other company decided to publicly spout out against a group of people, their employers would be well within their rights to fire said employee. The right to free speech does not remove the consequences for whatever you say. Also, just because someone claims their religion says something is right, that does NOT make it right. If it did, then all these other religions could claim it's alright to destroy Christians, and it would be. One more thing, Kevin... just because YOU believe in something, it doesn't mean it's any more correct or necessary for the entire world to live by your belief.

  35. Kevin: I’ll only respond to the part directed at me: The outrage from Christians seems to be that he is being punished for his religious beliefs. He’s not. He’s being punished because he made asinine comments about a group of people. His comments have a foundation in religious dogma. Although I think he’s mistaken on everything he said (his comments were outlandishly naïve, even on the face of it. Likening LGBT peoples to bestiality is shameful and outrageous), he has every right to expound them. Even though he has the right to expound them, he is still under contract, and therefore has certain limitations on what he can say without repercussions.

I really wish people would educate themselves on the Bible and really read and understand that the book has been edited and revised so many times no one really knows what it really means. It is a contradiction within itself and there are historical books (of the bible ) missing bc they did not fit neatly into the book according to the Church.

Maybe a little too free. He’s got lots of thoughts on modern immorality, and there’s no stopping them from rushing out. Like this one:

“It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”

That’s what is wrong with America… They scream we… have Freedom of speech but as soon as you speak your mind you get punished. I honestly think A&E should rethink their decision. Do Phil and I have the same beliefs? No! but does that make him a bad man for his beliefs and voicing them? ABSOLUTELY NOT! I don’t think anyone should blast or say hateful things to anyone for their beliefs. We need to respect everyone as we would want to be respected. So much hatred in this world. You can't threaten the president's life, or anybody else's life for that matter. Just because you think you have the right to say something, doesn't mean you should.

And mostly all Christians believe the same way. This type of life style is an abomination against GOD . Maybe Phil said it his way but look in the Bible there’s scriptures that back-up what Phil was talking about. As Christians we can see who’s really behind all of this the devil. He’s out to ruin what GOD has created
Phil & family start your own production and make your own t.v. show. Your fans will be there to support you & family. A&E is making a killing off your family money wise. They have no right to muzzle your freedom of speech.

  85. Being homosexual is no different than being black, white, asian, etc. It's something you're born with, not something you choose. No one in their right mind CHOOSES to be LGBTQ in a society where they are condemned for being so. The "Bible" does not condem homosexuality, and neither does your "God". By your religion (which is BS) God created all things - that includes LGBTQ people. You would be wise not to come on a page that supports LGBTQ peoples and talk down to us. Also - your god is a fake, and your religion is stolen from judaism, which stole it's beliefs from MY ancestors at the point of a sword while forcing them to convert. Do some research, quit being a sheep.

  86. Freedom of speech is everyone's argument but his speech is still intact.....he did not go to jail and the article hasn't been censored. Freedom of speech is so the government cannot persecute you for your own beliefs and expressions. A&E is not the government and when he started talking about the show in the interview he then became a representative of that show and his employer.....they have right to suspend him for denouncing a specific group of people because like most companies in America, it's against company policy.

Being homosexual is no different than being black, white, asian, etc. It’s something you’re born with, not something you choose. No one in their right mind CHOOSES to be LGBTQ in a society where they are condemned for being so.

He has full right to believe whatever the hell he wants, no one is saying he doesn’t. However, he’s a television star who is publicly know and represents the face of A&E – just like every other television star is the face of their network. It is never ok to make remarks about any class of person, especially not on national television when you’re a famous star.

What if that man had offended ethnic, racial or religious minorities? Would the anti-gay lobby support him?

  96. “expressing one’s beliefs” is the entire problem with not knowing how to define hate speech versus free speech. In this case, if he simply were just using free speech, did he have to say it on Nat’l television? Let free speech be said privately, where it cannot hurt others, or be “misconstrued” to mean something over another, and don’t complain when anti sentiments about anything become a heated battle; for you should have thought before you spoke.

I’m getting embarrassed to be gay these days… For gods sake just be yourself and what you do and who you love keep it real and at home. We can shove what we do down others throats like others do…. Whenever someone gets media attention for saying something bigoted, it reflects poorly on the company they're under. His comments were made and he was reprimanded by the network before anyone really noticed it happened. This has less to do with gay rights and more to do with corporate guideline.

This is what I am prepared to do if Phil is not given his rightful place on the show, as I am sure many other viewers are also prepared to do, I will no longer watch A&E, and as many who know me know i am a huge fan of Bates Motel along with many of you other programs! I will no longer be watching anything on A&E, when and only when I hear from the media that Phil has been brought back will I resume watching!!

Peace and Love to All!! ♥♥

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 7:06pm
  238. My Dear Friends- it’s not free protected speech if the comments are dangerous and /or false.

While it is true, many of our American rights are being infringed upon, we should never stand up for hate speech as legally defined:

Hate speech is communication that vilifies a person or a group based on discrimination against that person or group.

In law, hate speech is any speech, gesture or conduct, writing, or display which is forbidden because it may incite violence or prejudicial action against or by a protected individual or group, or because it disparages or intimidates a protected individual or group. The law may identify a protected individual or a protected group by certain characteristics.

Therefore, carefully consider the influence someone has when they make comments in a magazine or during an interview. The hate those comments might /will rally, the suicides it might cause, the abuse that will result, the deaths that will come from the beatings, the kids who will be kicked out….

Also, be weary and suspicious of any “christian” who claims to follow Christ, but then misquotes the Bible and uses it as a weapon. The clobber passages used against LGB community have been proven to be mistranslated since the original scrolls. Check out Gay People Go To Heaven when you have some time to scroll through the last 12 months of posts to learn, share and grow. https://m.facebook.com/GayPeopleGoToHeaven

Think about it before you jump on the “free speech” bandwagon. This isn’t an American thing…. This is a rights, safety and love thing.

Peace to you and yours, no matter where you stand on this issue.

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 7:08pm

Alot of what they say IS stupid, which is why they get high ratings (Just think Jersey Shore guys). What he says or any of the other millions of closed-minded people say, doesn’t change who I am. We need to learn to just let others BE. Being hateful back to ANYONE isn’t helping us. It isn’t strengthening us as a group of people, it’s weakening us. Change comes through love, tolerance and understanding and if we are just as bad as them… they aren’t even going to give us the chance TO understand us. Be the light, open their eyes in a loving way… doing so will change their minds.

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 7:30pm
  258. There seems to be so much intolerance voiced in these comments from people who seek tolerance from others. Ironic.

I believe every person has the right to express themselves and that every person has the right to their own sexual preference. I pity people that are homophobic. I don’t understand why sexual orientation is even an issue to others. Period. I don’t think about the intimacy others share, regardless of who they share that with.

What concerns me the most is the hypersensitivity in society. What ever happened to just choosing to not read a magazine article or watch a television show or listen to a song? Why is EVERYTHING personalized so damn much?

When a television actor or personality voices a belief, I don’t attach that belief to the network that airs them. To do so is ignorant.

The world is full of diversity. It would be an awful boring place if every single person was the same in their beliefs.

Back to my first statement, though, for members of a group demanding tolerance of others (which I agree should be the case), WHY are so many against showing tolerance to someone that disagrees with your beliefs? There is a huge double standard being exhibited. The same happens with race every day. There are groups and organizations that are exclusive to a certain race and that is accepted, yet many that support those organizations would scream racism if an organization was exclusive to race other than their own.

As far as A&E taking such a huge stand about Mr. Robertson’s statements, it is rather ironic that they don’t want to be associated with his religious convictions…yet aired Growing Up Gotti.

But A@E has every right to let him go if they feel those things he’s said reflect poorly on them. Anyone remember the guy who made an ass out of himself when he went through the drive thru at Chik-Fil-A. The first amendment protects your right to say whatever you want. It does not protect you from the repercussions. Just ask the Dixie Chicks!

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 8:02pm
  275. Oh my god, reading these comment pisses me off. You are ALL missing the point! We are ALL, LGBTQ and straight, entitled to an opinion! But, being against a group of people is wrong. Do you EVER see any LGBTQ person say they’re against being straight? No. And, if you did, then they are in the wrong, just like he and everyone “offended” by the LGBTQ people. Just as if someone was racist. THAT is also an opinion, but are they entitled to it? No. Because it’s WRONG. Get it now?

  276. An employee has an ethical responsibility to act in the best interests of her/his employer. Citizens of the U.S. have a First Amendment right to free speech; however, an employee who brings dishonor and disrespect to his employer by publicly promoting illegal discrimination against an oppressed minority deserves to be fired and sued for damages. This is the 21st century, not the 19th, and the promotion of such prejudiced and antiquated views is unethical, especially when it has the potential to add to the hate.

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 8:38pm
  311. Freedom of speech doesn’t apply in the workplace.

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 8:39pm
  312. Erin believe it or not, Christians are alot more tolerant than you think. My friend is a gay wiccan, hes a great guy, I hang with him have fun, I’m straight and married and a Christian Baptist, I view homosexuality as a sin just as I do lieing and killing and premarital sex, sin is sin, I don’t tell people to turn from their ways, I tell them God loves them and that I’m forgiven for all of my sins, Christians sin just like everyone else, only difference is the forgiveness. So why does it matter if a man in Louisiana says he believes in what his religion tells him to believe?

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 8:39pm
  313. All good and well.

If you were my boss. Would you fire me for bashing Christians in the workplace?

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 8:40pm
  314. I’m assuming you’re a straight, white male, Would you be ok with me lumping you into a category like pedophilia? (Since most pedophiles are straight, white, men, right?)

No? Then why would you support a man that lumps your gay Wiccan friend into the same category as people who sexually abuse animals?

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 8:43pm
  315. He wasn’t saying they are all the same, he was talking about sin in the bible.

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 8:46pm
  316. Oh?

“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” he tells reporter Drew Magary. “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

  317. I think I could support A&E’s decision had his comments been made while on their dime, but they were made in an article published by a magazine independent of A&E. Technically, he wasn’t “at work”.

If our employers monitored what we said in a public forum (such as Facebook) and and fired us for being controversial, would that be acceptable?

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 8:47pm

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 8:50pm
  322. He didn’t bash gays, he stated what he believes. And he wasn’t at the workplace, it was an interview, and because at this moment, gays are not allowed full benefits under the law, that’s being denied the benefits married couples get that are straight, Christians are getting thrown in jail, for practicing their beliefs, such as a church being forced to marry a homosexual couple in the church or get a lawsuit, or a company being told they have to give birth control to their employees when they believe otherwise, or be shut down. Ya benefits are nice, but I think being forced to go against your own religion to accommodate a group of people is a little worse.

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 8:51pm

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 8:53pm
  326. Christians are not getting thrown in jail for refusing to marry gay couples. Jesus Christ.

That’s why people can’t take you seriously. Because of garbage like that.

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 8:53pm
  327. Erin, your friend should take action, then, as that would be an unjustified reason for termination.

I am not saying that I agree with what he said. I don’t agree with much of what I hear or read on a daily basis, but rather than want those things removed, I just let it go.

I don’t understand what is so harmful about the opinion of one man? Politicians make these claims all the time.

He didn’t call for violence against anyone. He didn’t call for any kind of action, he just stated his beliefs.

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 8:57pm
  328. Not shaming gay men?

So being compared to people who sexually abuse animals is just telling it like it is????

  340. Did you actually read it??? Or do you just have selective reading comprehension??

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 9:12pm
  341. I copied this from the link you posted. It’s on page two of the interview.

“What, in your mind, is sinful?”

“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” he says. Then he paraphrases Corinthians: “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

  342. “It is a messed-up situation when Miley Cyrus gets a laugh, and Phil Robertson gets suspended.” Miley just danced and looked like an idiot, Phil bashed on a whole group of people. What he said wasn’t him expressing his opinion: it was clearly bashing because he came off in a insultive-manner. Yes, we have the right to our say, but many Americans forget that you should still watch your language and what NOT to say, and to be respectful and polite.

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 9:16pm
  343. So yeah. I’d say your absolutely “missing it”

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 9:16pm
  344. I do apologize I just found it, it says he paraphrased Corinthians, so albeit I did miss that part of the interview at first, again I do apologize for that I had to check the link on my laptop where it showed a page two and three, again I go back to my former response, is it wrong to state your religious beliefs in an interview, or at all for that matter is it not covered by freedom of speech? And can a company really go against what we are granted?

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 9:18pm
  345. I am 100% behind Gay rights..

But all the guy did was repeat, (almost verbatim I am sure) what he heard in church. He didn’t make it personal, he just answered a question.

I think republicans are destroying our country, but should I be banned from voting because of it?

A&E and the Show’s producers should say his statements are not representative of our views and have a nice day.

I as a supporter of LGBT rights am NOT offended by what he said, but am by the reaction…

    Anyone else agree?

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 9:19pm
  346. Amanda, I highly recommend you pay attention to company policy going forward. It could mean the difference between having a job, and the unemployment line.

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 9:19pm
  347. Would it be wrong for you to state your beliefs in the workplace? Or under a contractual agreement?

    Yes.

The same applies for me. I represent a company, if I give that company a bad name by constantly bashing Christians (as an example), then my company reserves the right to terminate my employment.

  360. As a gay guy, I fully support this goofy- azzed dude’s right to say anything he wants. I disagree. I don’t like it. I really feel for any gay youth and young people who are fans of his- who when they read of his remarks feel utterly let down by it. But it’s no different than an idolized sports figure doing something stupid to make ya question why you ever idolized them in the first place. I also support the right of the Rev. Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church to picket soldliers funerals w/ signs that read “God Hates Fags”. It’s ugly, cold, rude, deplorable and despicable- but it falls under free speech. I don’t like it- but I support their right- and thus duck dude exercising his right to free speech is as important as me asserting my right to marriage and job equality.

And lastly- tolerance is a funny thing. I’m not only gay- I’m a rare CONSERVATIVE gay guy. I have been treated quite stupidly over the years by some fellow conservatives- mainly those from the faith community- and don’t get me wrong- I deplore that behavior and think it’s stupid, ridiculous, unChristian and that Christ himself would frown on it… but that said- on the whole I feel I’ve experienced more intolerance from fellow gays for being conservative- than I have from conservatives for being gay.

Just sayin’… Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, ya’ll! -KJOlomon

As a someone in the eye of the public he could have had more tact about it, or just said “I don’t agree with it” and left it at that. Personally I don’t care, I live my life for myself, not him.

He voiced his belief and if his belief makes someone else want to harm them-self, then that person needs to seek help. This is reality people, people are going to say things you don’t agree with, it may be offensive. Grow up, recognize their right to their own opinion and belief just as you have your right to be you.
