Indiana University GLBT alumni group launches scholarship campaign

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — An Indiana University alumni group has launched what it’s calling the nation’s first scholarship campaign intended to assist gay and lesbian students.

Indiana-UniversityThe Herald-Times reports the IU Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Alumni Association announced the new campaign this week.

The campaign devoted to assisting GLBT students was kick-started by the promise of a $500,000 matching grant from an anonymous donor.

Alumni officials say the campaign has already brought in $200,000 in cash and pledges.

The scholarship campaign aims to increase support for both academic and emergency scholarships that the association has funded since 2005.

The emergency scholarship goes to students who have lost financial support from their families because of their sexual orientation.

But the alumni association hopes to also bolster funds for more academic scholarships.
