ESPN sportscaster: ‘I would not characterize’ Jason Collins as Christian

Monday, April 29, 2013

ESPN sportscaster Chris Broussard on Monday publicly bashed Washington Wizards’ center Jason Collins, just hours after the veteran NBA play became the first active male player in the four major American professional sports to come out as gay.

Chris Broussard

Broussard, speaking on ESPN’s “Outside The Lines” said that he would “not characterize (Collins) as a Christian.”

“Personally, I don’t believe that you can live an openly homosexual lifestyle or an openly, like premarital sex between heterosexuals. If you’re openly living that type of lifestyle, then the Bible says you know them by their fruits. It says that, you know, that’s a sin. If you’re openly living in unrepentant sin, whatever it may be, not just homosexuality, whatever it maybe, I believe that’s walking in open rebellion to God and to Jesus Christ.

“So I would not characterize that person as a Christian because I don’t think the bible would characterize them as a Christian.”

  2. well sweet cheeks that is why the key word in your statement is ‘I’. But you are not the authority to determine who is a Chrisian and who is not.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 2:53pm
  3. Then he might as well say most any NBA player who professes Christianity isn’t a True Christian™ cuz I doubt most are saving themselves for marriage. The double standards are astounding.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 2:55pm
  4. Somehow, I knew that there would be lowdown dirty bastard coming out to bash Jason for being who he is!!! I just knew!!!

  5. You are in no place to judge another person’s spirituality. Try tending to your spiritual relationship and stop passing judgement on others.

  6. Catch-22, can’t get married, can’t live in “sin”. Screw this jackwad.

  7. To each is own we may live that life but you are a christiqn once you say yes you are a christian

  8. Unless your name is GOD, who cares what you think?

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 2:56pm
  9. The Bible does say that you shall know Christians by their fruit… but it also says that the “fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23) I guess Mr. Broussard forgot about those.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 2:56pm
  10. let those Christians keep on judging and see where that gets you. Oh, let me ask your wife if you had sex before marriage?

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 2:57pm
  11. why would anybody care what this guy has to say . I don’t even know who he is . He does have the fundamental part of Christianity down though – the judgmental holier than thou attitude . I don’t have time for people like him or their opinions.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 2:57pm
  12. It’s unfortunate we even give prudence to what this man has to say? If he was really a Christian he would know he is not one to judge. Congrats to Jason! Very proud of him.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 2:58pm
  13. How about he sticks to how Jason plays instead of talking about religion on ESPN. It’s a sports channel, not the church channel.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 2:58pm
  14. If you are an example of “Christian”, no thanks. Judge not…isn’t that in the Bible somewhere? Oh yeah, that was a quote from a true Christian…the Original Christian…

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 2:58pm
  15. I would simply tell Mr. Broussard that I don’t consider him a Christian because he forgot the whole bit about not judging others lest he be judged.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 2:58pm
  16. Sorry that you are so ignorant Chris Broussard!

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 2:59pm
  17. Funny, that same book would characterise him as not being a Christian as well, Judge Not lest ye be Judged….

  18. serious? go fuck yourself you fucking idiot

  20. He justifies his hate behind his bible. It’s getting old really fast.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:00pm
  21. I would not characterize him as someone who is qualified to make that characterization. But apparently people who think they know everything about sports also happen to think they know everything about everything, and there is an unfortunate trend of such people working in debate media. *grrr*

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:00pm
  22. And i’m sure he is just so saintly. Religious people are most divisive. Isn’t that a contradiction of the Christian Faith….? Religion never solved the worlds problems. It usually only add to the strife…but what do i know…. AMEN! ;)

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:00pm
  23. ‘Let he who is without sin cast the first stone” …………..I have yet to meet such a person …….”judge not lest ye be judged”

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:00pm
  24. he sure is judgey. You know, I read somewhere that God doesn’t like that.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:01pm
  25. Religion is a choice. Being gay isn’t.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:02pm
  26. i wouldn’t characterize Chris Broussard as an ESPN Sportscaster (after that comment)…

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:03pm
  27. he is just jealous that Jason was able to “come out” and he is still hiding

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:03pm
  28. they always throw the bible crap…. get over it :-)

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:03pm
  29. It also says in the Bible ‘judge not, lest ye be judged’ and ‘he that hath no sin cast the first stone’….so, what was that point again? Also, nobody asked YOU if YOU would classify him as Christian. That is between him and God.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:04pm
  30. Wonder if Chris Broussard ever over ate in a public setting or ever openly disrespected his parents, or slandered an individual..if so I suppose he should also classify himself as a not a Christian. Within both pericopes in the biblemost frequently cited for this response these are considered sins as well. Not to mention Christ never had a comment recorded about homosexuality.

  36. Blah blah blah.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:12pm
  37. He gives Christianity a bad name, which 95% of Christians already do. Pretty sad.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:13pm
  38. What the hell does religion have to do with sports? Why is ESPN giving this guy airtime?

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:14pm
  39. They need to bounce this idiot right to the curb. What a total idiot

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:15pm

  48. You know, he probably wouldn’t characterise Jesus as a Christian either – long hair, sandals, caftan…

  49. Who the “f” cares what he thinks… I know I don’t

  50. so who asked

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:29pm
  51. So according to this braniac “christian” if you are not ” **openly** living a homosexual lifestyle ” that is ok? But it’s a sin if you are open about it? Who else thinks he is trying to tell us something – about himself perhaps?

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:31pm
  52. Chris, take a hike!

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:33pm
  53. Fire his ass, report sports, not your personal fucking feelings.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:35pm
  54. Luckily Mr. Broussard is not the final arbiter of who is and who is not a Christian…and given that he is assuming that role, he might just be putting his own status with the creator in question…..

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:36pm
  55. And who cares what this sportscaster says anyway? Who cares what he thinks. He is not judge and jury. Most people on this earth are not christians anyway! You cant fix stupid.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:37pm
  56. I wonder if he will be employed a week from now… ?

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:37pm
  57. Nor would I consider you a Christian…

  58. Who gives a shit what Chris Broussard has to say?

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:38pm
  59. Chris thats BS

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:43pm
  60. So much ignorance! Chris, truly I may be paraphrasing but please check John 3 16. “I gave my only begotten son, he who believes in Him shall not parish but shall have eternal life”. It says nothing about being gay. So have fun! And keep your hateful mouth shut! BTW I am not religious.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:46pm
  61. OK by noon tomorrow – he will be resigning….there are other religions out there other than Christianity….

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:47pm
  62. Isn’t it a sin to judge – thou shall not judge rings a bell to me

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:50pm
  63. Who asked him? And what the fuck does it have to do with playing sports?

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 4:03pm
  64. I’d like to publicly bash Chris Broussard for being a homophobe, close minded and not very Christian himself.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 4:03pm
  65. Chris Broussard, you are not a Christian. Passing judgement, name calling or labeling is not your right.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 4:04pm
  66. Funny, I must have missed all his comments in the past 23 years of his career where he took every opportunity to call a straight basketball player having pre-marital sex out on being non-Christian. Know who else can’t be called Christan. People who judge others. I’m pretty sure Jason’s sex life is none of an NBA color commentator’s business unless Jason is having sex on the basketball court during a game. Seem fair?

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 4:05pm
  67. He has no right to judge another human being no matter what he thinks. And ones like him are certainly NOT “Christians” by ANY definition of the work or action. May his imaginary “God” strike him down for claiming to know what that “God” and his “religion” say is the truth for it certainly is not the truth in the real world most of us live in.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 4:08pm
  68. Dude stick to talking about sports and stay out of grown up business.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 4:09pm
  69. News Flash – not all of ‘us’ are Christians anyway…..there are MANY other belief systems!

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 4:12pm
  70. Yes it’s also a sin to judge others. It’s also a sin to eat pork, shellfish. It’s also a sin the scrutinize your neighbor… Shall I go on??

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 4:13pm
  71. Christians follow Christ…if you instead are obsessed with the rituals of a violent insular desert clan…well that’s something else entirely

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 4:22pm
  72. But I would characterize Chris Broussard as a class A a-hole!

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 4:23pm
  73. I didn’t realize the NBA was a Christian league…

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 4:26pm
  74. Since Jesus never once mentioned homosexuality or eluded to it, you’d only not say he was a Christian if you believe The Old Testament trumps The New Testament!

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 4:32pm
  75. asshole!

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 4:33pm
  76. I don’t wish for him to be fired because that would be un-Christian for me, as a gay Christian, to say (tho I consider myself just a Christian! Me being a homosexual has nothing to do with my beliefs!) But he should be reprimanded because his job is to report on sports, not pass judgement or bring his personal, though bigoted, beliefs into his workplace! Tell me who won what game! That is all you were hired to do! The end!

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 4:39pm
  77. … “Judge NOT” Broussard!!!

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 4:43pm
  78. Asshat

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 4:51pm
  79. Anti-LGBT people need to grow up. Talk about playground bully tactics/thinking.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 5:00pm
  80. I think Christians are instructed not to judge others either. So may we conclude then that Broussard is not Christian as well?

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 5:21pm
  81. I can think of a lot more unchristian ways that actually harm others, like judging others. He can have his version of Christian but more and more others disagree with him.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 5:37pm
  82. Gee Mr. Broussard, would you characterize Wilt Chamberlain as Christian, or any other of those good boys who sleep with 10,00 women a year, when they are married! No shortage of ignorance!

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 5:59pm
  83. Well Chris, I wouldn’t characterize you as a journalist or an expert about basketball.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 6:03pm
  84. Nobody cares what you think…

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 6:20pm
  85. I wouldn’t characterize Jason Collins as a Christian.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 6:43pm
  86. I don’t know what Jason Collins faith is, but if he believes in Jesus Christ, forgiveness, and compassion he has every right to be a Christian. His sexuality has nothing to do with it. And Chris Broussard? Let’s see how many people back his view. I think he’s being judgemental and bigoted.

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 6:51pm
  87. Here come the homophobic remarks!

Posted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 6:57pm
  88. Only in America will you immediately be labeled as homophobic if you don’t make a comment that praises homosexuality or you disagree with it in the slightest manner.
