Mefferd: Gay rights should not ‘trump the rights of Christians’ to not see gays

BRIAN TASHMAN | Right Wing Watch

Conservative talk show host Janet Mefferd has waded into the controversy about an Indiana high school where a group of students wanted to organize a separate prom that would specifically prevent gay and lesbian students from attending.

After lamenting that “public schools are morally bankrupt,” Mefferd asserted that proms which allow all students — gay or straight — to attend actually violate the rights of Christian students who disapprove of homosexuality.

Janet Mefferd

What right in particular, you might ask?

According to Mefferd, apparently the right of students not to even see gay people!

She maintained that the students’ desire not to see gay students outweighs the rights of gay students to attend their own prom.

“Why should the rights of the [gay] activists trump the rights of Christians” who don’t want “to see that,” Mefferd asked.

Mefferd: Everything is so upside down in our society now and right and wrong have completely switched where what is really wrong is to say you shouldn’t have two boys allowed to go to the high school prom.

Now we can get into a big issue of the public schools are morally bankrupt at this point and we all ought to exit and just let them, let them do their thing, and that may be the ultimate answer; on the other hand, I feel for these Christian kids who are in a prom or kids who are at this high school who say, ‘you know something, do we have to go down this road?’

Whether the homosexual activists like it or not, and I know this isn’t politically correct to say this, but not everybody wants to see that. I know that that’s offensive to the activist crowd, they want us all to see it, they want us all to approve of it, they want us all to call it blessed and okay and rejoice and have parties and throw confetti in the air over this whole thing. But the fact of the matter is it’s a moral issue. You will always have Christians who will disagree with this and why should the rights of the activists trump the rights of Christians?

Also at everyone bashing Christians in here, good job doing the same exact thing you hate that heterosexists do. Attacking all Christians doesn’t make you a better person than people who attack LGBTAQ, it makes you worse because you’ve most likely experience attacks for being LGBTAQ or an ally so you should know better.

I read Your article and no one is saying You are being forced to just love gay people, Be crazy about the idea or throw confetti at their weddings or what ever, All the gay community is asking of You and others is to be compassionate, To have understanding for Your fellow human beings, To be open minded enough to realize that We are all unique in Our own way and have a God given right to be who We are. Who are You to be so judge mental of other people. What are You teaching the children of this world !? When it comes to My children

  50. an educators job is to teach, that includes teaching tolerance and acceptance no matter what their own personal bias is. all proms should be integrated, and if the students dont like it, then they dont have to go. its about equality, and kids are going to have to learn that in the real world, there are no special exceptions made for people that are hateful on a certain group, race or religion.

  59. Well Ms Mefferd: did it ever occur to you that maybe it bothers people to see fat people with skinny people, black with white, tall with short, able with disable, people with tattoos, body piercings….etc ??? maybe people “JUST DONT WANT TO SEE THAT” you stand on a shakey soap box lady ! stop hiding behind christianity. alot of christians LIKE MYSELF think you speak from ignorance and hate and FEAR. maybe people just dont want to see YOU. sounds absurd doesnt it ?? u know why ? becuz it is. nobody wants your blessing, your acceptance or your confetti. nor do they need it. lets open up your bedroom and peer in ! on second thot NOBODY WANTS TO SEE THAT. becuz what happens there is no ones business except yours and your (most likely unsatisfied) partner. i am a christian mom of 4, married for almost 25 years. so i say this-”get over yourself. u are no better than anyone else. gay or straight. u have no right to judge. that job is taken – jesus has it- and he is good at it. so why dont u just let him do his job.” now go finish cutting eye holes in pillowcases with your bible group.

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 2:33pm
  78. And you set up HS students to promote hate and anger. It is far harsher to exclude the gay students than to allow them to attend prom. You may believe that it’s immoral but not everyone believes the same as you, and just because you do doesn’t mean it’s true. Each person deserves the same rights as all students. You can’t support one without not supporting the other, so the right thing is to allow ALL to be equal. That’s what God wants.

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 2:37pm

  81. This woman acts like gays are inviting people into our bedrooms. Frankly I don’t care what she wants to see. Too long have gays not been aloud to participate in key events in their childhood because of what other people don’t want to see. I don’t want to be assualted by hetero sex in every film but you don’t see me grandstanding about it (except right now… shut up.)
These kids aren’t asking to have sex on the dance floor, but to participate in a coming of age moment like everyone else. Don’t push your idea of morality on everyone else.

These so-called Christians are the first to scream about THEIR rights, but the first to trample on everyone else’s rights. Hypocrisy at it’s finest.

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 3:26pm
  103. Wow…. Just wow…. You have a right to religious freedom, meaning that within your church you can choose to not see gay people and even to expel them from your religion if you wish. That right does NOT extend past the church doors!!!

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 3:33pm
  104. So As we all already know, Christians have ALL the rights, including the right to deny those rights to others, Just so that THEY can feel good? FAIL!

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 3:34pm
  105. This is such an easy problem to fix. The KKKristians can put bags over their heads and then they won’t see ANY sinners, let alone gay ones. I suggest plastic bags. . .

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 3:39pm
  106. Nobody has the right not to see anyone else. At all. We have to look at her homophobic face, she has to look at our gay ones.

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 3:39pm
  107. Oh, please, Mefferd, get real. You have always seen gays everywhere, whether you knew it or not. Get over it. Jesus was and is inclusive NOT exclusive. Christians should be more like Him.

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 3:41pm
  108. Sorry but the fact that gays exist does not somehow victimize Christians. How solipsistic to expect the world to conform to their own rigid limitations. What small minds.

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 3:43pm
  109. And what if someone said “Women’s rights should not trump Men’s rights!!!?” Would she feel the same way? NOT!

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 3:47pm
  110. If god hated gays he would not make 10 -15% of the population that way. Ms. Mefferd should get a gripe and get over assholeness.

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 3:53pm
  111. First off, not everyone should be forced to be “Christians.” Everyone has different interpretations of christianity and religious practices. Some are bigots like her and some are actually accepting. What makes them so important? Stop forcing your bigoted views onto others. Let people live as they should.

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 3:57pm
  112. and that is why religion neesds to be kept in the churches; never in public schools.

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 4:28pm
  117. I love these idiots who think “gay” and “christian” are exclusive of one another. Most gay people in America are christians that grow up in christian households. This woman and most of these types of “christians” are cult followers who beieve they are justified in committing religious persecution of others in the name of Jesus. They are equal to the morons in Westboro Baptist. They certainly do not trump the religious freedom rights of everyone else to believe instead in a loving God unlike theirs. People who hate and spread lies in the name of God deserve to be discriminated against and their beliefs exposed as true bigotry and not christian. No human being has the right to speak for God or deny them God’s love. She should disappear. And on a personal note – what the hell is with her hair??? Obviously that is what happens when you piss off the gay people in your town.

  118. How far would she be willing to go with that logic? Not everyone wants to “see” her style of Christianity!

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 4:36pm
  119. Huh, I figured existing was a more important right than the right to not see things that would shatter your bigotry. Guess I was wrong.

  122. What are this lady’s credential again? Did she graduate from IMBECILE high schol, and went on to attend S.T.U.P.I.D. Community College? Only that would remotely explain such stupidity.

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 5:14pm
  123. Sounds like when people didn’t want to “see” them back in 1940 Europe. Easy not to when they end up becoming ashes from a crematorium. How far will you take it indeed.

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 5:15pm
  124. Same argument the wackos would have used to keep the schools segregated or that Hitler would have used against the Jews! Asshat!!!

  128. I’m sure you see them everyday. What a stupid statement.

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 7:27pm
  129. You usually know when a statement is fallible and unjust when it can’t be properly turned around.

    EQUALITY
Gay Man/Woman: “I want to be treated equally under the law. I want to be able to marry who I love.”

Christian Man/Woman: “I want to be treated equally under the law. I want to be able to marry who I love.”

    DISCRIMINATION
Christian Man/Woman: “I don’t want to see any gays at my child’s prom. If they are there, they will be asked–or forced– to leave.”

Gay Man/Woman: “I don’t want to see any chrsitians at my child’s prom. If they are there, they will be asked–or forced– to leave.”

    It’s that simple.

  130. I nasty thing to say but eventually bigots like Ms Mefferd will have passed on.

  131. I’d prefer not to have to see whiny Christians everytime I leave the house but frankly they’re harder to avoid than herpes these days

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 7:48pm
  132. I don’t want to see up-tight assholes who use the Lord’s name in vain while assuming things about people they don’t know and passing judgement and bearing false witness on young folks. But I tolerate them and will throw confetti and have a good time, because I am a true Christian.

  133. BIGOT

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 8:38pm
  134. Let them go to a Christian school if they don’t like it, where they can keep themselves and their kids isolated from reality – or better yet, home school their kids, so they can REALLY get the full benefit of mind control.

  135. Chuck Hall – You realize when they start doing that that is how cult’s form and the last thing we need is another cult.

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 9:21pm
  136. Replace the words “gay people” with the words “black people” and see how that sounds.

Posted on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 9:30pm
  137. Do these “Christians” even look past their bibles to the real world? As in censorship.. “If you don’t want to see something, CLOSE YOUR EYES.”

  142. I wonder just how Christian she really is. My experience on this world has taught me that if you look closely at a homephobe, you often find a closet homesexual, Now that is a sorry person, self hate for herself and others like her. Just saying…

Posted on Monday, February 18, 2013 at 9:55am
  143. She should close her eyes, then.
