HONOLULU — Actor and singer Jim Nabors, best known for his starring role in the 1960s television sitcom “Gomer Pyle, USMC,” married his longtime partner Stan Cadwallader earlier this month.
Nabors told Hawaii News Now on Tuesday that he married Cadwallader, his companion of 38 years, in Seattle on Jan. 15.
This is the first time Nabors has publicly acknowledged his sexual orientation after living quietly with Cadwallader in Hawaii for decades:
“I’m 82 and he’s in his 60s and so we’ve been together for 38 years and I’m not ashamed of people knowing, it’s just that it was such a personal thing, I didn’t tell anybody,” Nabors said. “I’m very happy that I’ve had a partner of 38 years and I feel very blessed. And, what can I tell you, I’m just very happy.”
Nabors said he and Cadwallader traveled to Washington state, where same-sex marriages became legal in early December 2012. They were married at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle.

While I am very happy for the newlyweds, some of the comments made by Mr. Nabors just show how times are changing. “I’m not ashamed of people knowing, it’s just that it was such a personal thing, I didn’t tell anybody…” Honestly, that statement contradicts itself…The reason you did not tell anybody is because you were ashamed at some level. Thank goodness, the younger generations really don’t care what sexual orientation someone happens to be. And that is the way it should be. After all, why should anyone other than my husband care what my sexual orientation is?
