LONDON — The Archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nichols, who also leads the Catholic Church in England and Wales, announced this week that he has ordered the Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Central London to stop holding masses that were specifically designed for LGBT Catholics.

The so-called “Soho Masses” were set up six years ago by a group of openly gay Catholics and sympathetic priests to cater for those struggling to live within a church that takes an absolutist line against same sex relationships.
The decision is seen as a significant win for the traditionalist wing of the Catholic Church who have lobbied both the Archbishop and Rome to cancel what they saw as a deviation from official church teachings.
It also comes at a time when the Catholic Church itself is redoubling its efforts to oppose same sex marriage legislation following moves in Britain and France to allow gay men and women to marry.
As part of his Christmas Day message, the Archbishop attacked the government’s plan to introduce equal marriage in England and Wales and described it as a shambles.
In recent years traditionalists had increased their campaign against the Soho Masses, even secretly recording a prayer session and releasing the video online.

Being a Gay catholic is like being a Gay republican – I just don’t get it.
Catholics are actually he most tolerant of any of the Christian religions and, I dare say, most other diety-based religions. However, Catholicism also has the more outspoken people. This may just be that Catholicism is the largest of the Christian religions and religious officials get more attention. I am in no way defending this guy, but one should not condemn the whole of Catholicism for the acts of one.

People also have to realize that the people in power grew up in a gay-hating society. LGBTQs may be at a disadvantage now, but when these generations grow up, they are going to pass their own laws and rules. As for the future of religion, I am afraid their fate is sealed. One cannot stay the same in a changing world.

It is apparent to me that many religions will continue to chase more and more people away from their “religions” when you will find them come to an alternate decision about gay folk. Suddenly they will love us and “accept” us not because it is the right or loving thing to do, but because they will need to work again to fill their coffers. Bleck.
