Woman accused of faking ‘hate crime’ attack slams investigators

LINCOLN, Neb. — The woman accused of staging a “hate crime” and filing a false police report in a highly publicized incident earlier this year, continues to maintain that she is a victim and denies fabricating the incident.

In e-mails sent to local media this week, Charlie Rogers, 34, accused the Lincoln police Department of botching the investigation, and slammed investigators in a YouTube video posted late Tuesday.

Rogers claimed that “she probably will go to jail” for a crime she says she didn’t commit.

The case against Rogers stemmed from her allegedly filing a false report with Lincoln police on July 22 in which she claimed that three masked attackers invaded her home, painted homophobic slurs on the walls, and carved them into her skin, before attempting to set her house on fire.

Rogers, a former standout basketball player at the University of Nebraska and who is openly lesbian, was charged after investigators determined that her claims of being attacked were fabricated.

Police said they found no sign of a struggle at Rogers’ house, no blood on the bedspread where she said the intruders cut her, and a forensic pathologist from the FBI determined that Rogers made the cuts herself or they were done with her permission, according to her arrest warrant.

Rogers pleaded not guilty September 27.
