Professional hockey players are the most supportive professional athletes on the issue of marriage equality, according to a recently published ESPN poll.
The poll surveyed 62 professional athletes from the NHL, NFL, NBA and MLB on the topics of politics, the presidential election and social issues, including same-sex marriage and abortion.
Overall, the survey found that 59 percent of the athletes surveyed support marriage equality for same-sex couples, but that support was heavily influenced by the NHL, whose players supported gay marriage by a whopping 92 percent. The NFL also tipped the scale in favor of gay marriage by 61 percent.
But it was the NBA (53 percent) and Major League Baseball (55 percent) who came out opposed to same-sex marriage.
Among other social issues, 59 percent of athletes surveyed said their were pro-choice, led by the NBA, NHL and then the NFL — only MLB players responded that they were overwhelmingly (65 percent) “pro-life.”
The survey is here, and includes responses on politics and the presidential election.

Another reason to end the NHL lock out and not watch basketball.
go NHL! that’s what I’m talkin about
… Bravo!
I might have to start watching hockey!
I have to admit I’m surprised.
Hockey is where it’s at! TY NHL and every one associated with Hockey.
Why do I care about what pro athletes think about?
Suspect most of them are Canadians – allies are important everywhere so that the closeted athletes can have support too – though, personally, I can’t stand sports!
I’m glad of this. Our youth listen and look up to them. Their opinion will have a great effect on our cause. Thanks guys, Bravo!
wow I guess the fact that so many hockey players are foreign really shows….not surprised NBA was low, surprised MLB was lower….
